Let's all play a game! What does this passage of the Bible tell us about Jehovah?

    Lets play a fun game?

We all know that as witnesses, we were constantly told to read the bible, and ask ourselves what the passage we read reveals about God.

As an example, here is a WT that highlights this.

May 2016 WT study edition "Benefit Fully From Jehovah's Provisions"

8 Ask questions. As you read a Bible passage, take time to pause and ask yourself such questions as these: ‘What does this tell me about Jehovah? How can I apply this information in my life? How can I use it to help others?’ When we reflect on such questions, we will surely get more out of our bible reading.

So with this in mind, can we all come up with a disturbing section of the bible to help "reveal God's personality"?

    I'll start:

Lot. A so called friend of God....so what does that tell us about God's thoughts on daughters?

OK, how about this one from yesterday's Watchtower:

When praised, we do well to apply Jesus' words: "When you have done all the things assigned to you, say: 'We are good-for-nothing slaves. What we have done is what we ought to have done.'" (Luke 17:10)

The study goes on to say it would be haughty to accept praise or appreciation, instead we should "speak appreciatively of Jehovah" and what he does for us.

So this scripture teaches us that God is a horrible friend and/or parent. He insists on constant praise & appreciation, but does not show appreciation for others in return. Instead he treats them like slaves, like mere chattel, unworthy of human dignity. Humans need affirmation and acknowledgement, something that God must have designed in us as part of our reflection of His personality, yet as our father he withholds fulfilling that need.

Here's another one I was thinking about the other day:

Ephesians 4:29: "Let a rotten word not come out of your mouth, but only what is good for building up as the need may be, to impart what is beneficial to the hearers."

So what do we learn of God's qualities? Hypocrisy. The Bible is full of rotten stuff, not just "positive" things for upbuilding. So why did he not follow his own instructions here ands only impart to his readers what is "beneficial"?

I was speaking to a still in elder the other day, one of my old colleagues, and we were discussing some of the more horrible aspects of the OT (children being mauled by bears, sex slavery, people being hacked to pieces etc) and he admitted he doesn't read them as he finds them upsetting - not upbuilding!

Deut 28:15-57 is a classic example where Jehovah spews out verse after verse of utter "rottenness"

    Read 1 Samuel 4:1-10

Over 30000 brothers were killed in battle. They had apparently listened to those "taking the lead" and went to battle although the "ark of the covenant" was not at the right place. So Jehovah had probably wanted them to disobey those brothers.

What does this tell me about Jehovah? That it is really hard to know what he wants from you, if you listen to the ones in charge. That he allows women to be widows and children to be fatherless boys so we have many of those to care for.

How can I apply this information in my life? Jehovah wants me to disobey the "slave" when they go against him or I will get killed!

How can I use it to help others? It might be helpful to see the ttatt. One elder I confronted with this passage in the Bible and he actually seemed to get it.

    Hi,

The bible was written by rich Jewish men. So how they portrayed God is through their own eyes.

We are made in God's image, so that means we are somewhat alike. Ok. We know that before folks have kids they are self centered, no sympathy nor empathy, no compassion for folks who have families and hold down jobs. Many can't work overtime but those who don't have family don't get it. So. In the Ot God was like had a certain amount of understanding but he didn't take no mess. You messed up blam...,Jehovah got rid of you or allowed you to suffer until you came back to him. Self centered, wouldn't you say. Kind of unforgiving. But now here comes his son to earth, we see a different Jehovah, he ain't destroying and killing like he did in the OT, no not while his son is on earth. Now Jehovah has calmed down, he thinks and acts differently since his son. Just like humans. We are bad to the bone before our kids are born then we become wet noodles. A person who may have been squirmish, that same person now don't even care if their child spits up on them.

The Bible only tells you how to get along with your fellow man. Some see the Bible as rules and regulations and others see it as a guide to life and how to deal with this life and find some peace through all of it.

Can't focus on who and what God does, there's a message in the Bible. Love God (if you believe there is a God), love your neighbor as yourself. But many don't love themselves so how can they love their neighbors that's why it's difficult for JWs to bring in others. People see there is no love in them.

I think Jehovah just want humans to remember. I made you and I can break you. To praise him no matter what. Even if you going through a bad time. Remember all the good he has done.... so in essence God is saying all that I've done. Stop your belly aching. You whiners, you.

I have just finished reading the book of Joshua. (King James Version)

By way of the Israelites going to war Jehovah eliminated so many groups/races/ whatever he didn't like (for whatever reasons) For the survivors of the Israelites (casualty figures not listed) this was a brutalizing affair.

From this aging person is this thought'; If he hated the whoeverites so much why didn't he destroy them himself just 'pull the plug'.. on their life force and long before they became so 'corrupted'.

This 'black' area of the bible was always disturbing to me.

Stay on topic people! The account of job tells us that Jehovah equates children with cattle that easily can be replaced.

The bible tells us that Jehovah is a God of justice. And justice demanded that he execute the death sentence on Adam and eve. But being the supreme judge he can bend his rules to suit him as to why he didn't execute Cain and David. Even though justice demanded it.
