I crack for the fun of it yet I am also addicted. I have to constantly crack my knuckles.

Also, I ALWAYS have to crack my toes before I put my shoes on!

Once you go crack you never go back.

I know EXACTLY what you mean. Esp when you said once you start you HAVE TO finish. This is very true, because if you dont the cycle of cracking is disturbed. If one does not finish cracking, Id rather be elsewhere. I crack my big toe often. I believe cracking relaxes you momuntarily, and only that!

Ah, Frantic! I'm glad that you (like me) understand the art of cracking!

What's really happening when you "crack" your knuckles is that you are either pushing the joint back into or out of its normal position. Joints are the meeting points of two separate bones which are held together by connecting tissues and ligaments . A thick, clear lubricant (made mostly of carbon dioxide and some nitrogen) called synovial fluid is found between the bones. When you stretch or pull your finger to get that desired popping noise, you are causing the bones to pull apart. Pressure is reduced on the synovial fluid and bubbles form that quickly expand and then burst - which is why you get that noise.

Not everybody's joints crack. Some people have a larger separation between the bones and some people can't relax enough to allow the bones to separate. If you can crack and your mom tells you, you're going to get arthritis, she's just yanking your chain. There is no scientific evidence that cracking your knuckles leads to arthritis

I am a controlled cracker,I no longer do it in public....but I do crack my gum.

    * raises hand,,,,,,,,,,Hi, My name is Dede, and I am a Crack Addict*,, I have been popping my knuckles since I was 4. It all starting in the Kingdom Hall out of boredom.

I have also read what Ruby said, it is the fluid in the joints that you hear popping. Not sure if that is always the case in every pop, crackle , crack etc.

I have popped my hands since like I said, 4 yrs old. and my knuckles look about the same. But I do have arthritis and have suffered with it since I was diagnosed at 5. My feet got it the worse, after I had surgery, I cant pop my big toe anymore.......oh the horrors!!!!!!!! But at least my feet felt better for awhile.

(((((((((( extra hugs to Gopher, arthritis sufferers need many hugs)))))))))))
