I think GPS enabled mobile phones wil be the "next big thing" for several reasons:

    • Mobile phone makers need to add things to the phones to make us buy them. Really, cameras are getting old and boring (and who needed a phone to take a picture?!)
    • GPS is becoming more mainstream (check out the sat-nav in cheaper vehicles and hand-held / pocket PC type solutions)
    • Garmin (big GPS manufacturer) already makes a mobile phone / GPS combo.
    • Motorolla has made the smallest GPS chipset. They also happen to be one of the worlds biggest mobile manufacturers.
    • Most importantly ... GPS is complimentary to a mobile phone. The point of both of them is that you take them with you when you travel and also the GPS could tell you where the nearest XYZ is that you search for on your mobile - there could be a lot of good services built around the combo.

    Ok, I'm waffling aren't I?!

I would definitely put that on my girl's wrist. I think it doubles as a watch??? I have seen the prototypes and I think that they are a great idea for young ones, even teens, sorry kids! Nowadays, you cannot be too careful. If something happened to Teryn, I would want to know right away where she was and how to get to her ASAP....correction: sooner than that even!!!

I am not saying your parents have to use it to find out where you are at every second, but if you are supposed to tell your parents where you are going anyway, what's the big deal. I was never allowed to go somewhere my parents didn't already know. Parents don't have the capability to see what you are doing, just where you are. So its not really taking all the freedom away.

How about microchip implants that people have surgically installed in their pets?

After looking at the news regarding the abduction of Dru Sjodin, this technology it has become a topic in my home. I don't know if my wife will wear one, but when our children are born, they will.

There is a miniature GPS -still experimental- that can be implanted under the skin:

That's from a Mexican company. The chip is called VeriChip. It does not use GPS technology but weak radio signals. Therefore it can only be used to ID people at a secure-access doors, ID a dead body or a lost/stolen pet. It works for ID, not for tracking at a distance.

It lies dormant under yourskin until energized by a proprietary VeriChip reader. The VeriChip then transmits your personal verification number in milliseconds to the external reader.

I think for very small kids it is a good thing. Maybe just in their backback or something. For older kids, I could see how they would want this, but it the kid is driving my vehicle then hell yes! I say put one in the car. And its not like parents would sit around w/a map and the GPS tracking their kids. Or at least one would hope not. Hell I'd like to have a couple for when me and the gang go fishing...that way I would know where their drunk asses were when they take off w/ my sneak a toke! *LOL*

    Sincerely,

I think it's a great idea in deterring child molesters . I don't think it's an issue of sacrificing freedom for security like elsewhere said . I think it's an issue of protecting the innocent from vicious predators who deserve to be shot on site but will usually get a fair trial and a sentance that's too light . As we say in sports " a good deffense beats a good offense " usually.
