It is true that JW's always have a answer about an issue. No matter how much you try to entrap one in a argument they will quote a scripture supporting thier viewpoint. Of course not the entire scripture is used or the context of the scripture makes no difference, its just the few words that seem like it supports the org. viewpoint.

Several examples of this and im only quoting from what ive been told by witnesses so i dont know exact scriptures, but in the argument about the biblical basis of turning in field service reports they will qoute you a scripture about "good reports" or something by Paul.

We all know the example of door to door service and the scripture the society uses about Jesus instructions to his disciples, which has nothing to do with door to door service.

Another one is the blood issue and God's instructions on spilling blood upon killing animals, where does it state that blood transfusions are banned?

It is true that JW's always have a answer about an issue. No matter how much you try to entrap one in a argument they will quote a scripture supporting thier viewpoint. After I was baptized I thought that I had all the answers, and could back it all up from scripture.

After I was baptized, I thought that i had all the answers, all of which I could back up with scripture. The interesting thing is, though, is that although my sense of reassurance is now gone, I actually feel more content knowing that there are no perfect answers.

    Hi Blueblades,

Thanks for hitting everyone with a question for which there is no definitive answer!!

I've enjoyed the interesting comments in this thread thusfar. Carmels comment about reality not being as bleak as most people think got me thinking about the difference between reality and truth, and how they both relate to facts.

Two people with the exact circumstances may view their own realities very differently. One's cup is half empty, and the other one's cup is half full. How they would each describe their own circumstance would be the "truth", and although the more tangible elements (facts) are common to both peoples' circumstance, their "realities" are different and thus so is their "truth".

Truth is something which is not false -- to a JW it is relative as the truth can change-- so the correct phrase is not "What is Truth" but "what is our current understanding"

John 18:38 said to him:What is Truth?

The Society's Comprehensive Concordance lists all the scriptures with the word Truth in the verse. From Genesis 42:16 to 3 John 12. They cite at least 160 verses speaking about Truth, yet never actually explain what it is.Oh there are articles of their interpretation about Truth in its different contextual determinations.I'm not convinced thta we really ever get to the truth of the matter.

If you stick your finger in a fire....it will burn like hell....that's a TRUTHFULL statement...and a fact.

If you jump off a 3 story building and try to fly.....you will fall.....that's a truthfull statement and a fact.

Certain things in life that are provable, are facts and truths.

The things we cannot fully prove are not truths or facts. The bible god is one of these......and any other god for that matter. Many times we simply believe something we have no proofs for because they simply make the most sense to us.........but it may be FAR from truth, facts, and reality.

Chevysntats followed my post with a connection to it."Losing truth in Bible Translations."Can we say that the Bible itself is truthful, even though it speaks so much about truth

.When the scholars accept that the Bible is from God and not man,is this truthful. We know that certain things are true ,ie.Gravity and the actions that follow, and many other examples about what is truth that.I'm talking about.

"What is Truth?"in connection with the expressions found in Scripture about God,Jesus,Creation and issues related to life and death as expounded upon in the Bible,I'm asking in all of this controversy,"What is Truth?

When Pilate asked this of Jesus what was his answer,"SILENCE".So when I'm asked that same question, who am I to do otherwise than what Jesus did,so I'm silent because I don't know what is truth on these matters.

Chevysnats post and the responses to it,seem to support my reasoning.

Truth is the only thing that is based on fact and is how we determine the fact from fiction. The opposite of a lie . The fact that many bible translations are eroneous is a truth.

I think jesus was quiet when pilot asked that question is more likely because he had already accomplished his ministry in connection with the truth prior to being arrested and was awaiting his exit from this world . Pilot knew that jesus was innocent and that was a truth so he tried to release him but became fearful of a riot so he allowed jesus to be condemned to death .

For me is fascinating that Jesus didn't answer this question to Pilate.

I have the "felling" that THE TRUTH that Jesus was talking about was not a thing, but a person. At last THE TRUTH, as an isolated question doesn´t have any spiritual importance. It has a meaning in a context, for example: What's THE TRUTH about life after death? On the other hand, the only meaning that I can see about THE TRUTH as an isolated question is something like the M Theory (The physical theory of everything).

The only way in which I can undestand why Jesus didn't reply, is because Jesus was talking about a person, an Pilate was asking about a "thing"

Jesus taught I am THE TRUTH.

When the Master (i.e. the Johannine Jesus, because I doubt the historical Jesus ever said such a thing) says "I am the truth", how is the disciple supposed to respond? "He is the truth", or "I am the truth?" (Reminds me something in The Life of Brian.)

Muslim mystic and martyr Hallaj is also known for saying "I am the truth".
