Seasonal Affective Disorder-when does it start?

    Hello fellow bastards and bastardetts.

I was reading a thread a while back concerning this affliction, and was surprised of the amount of people who suffer from this. For those unfamiliar with this,........it's basically a 'wintertime blues' thingy......but much worse. It is caused by a lack of enough sunlight, and can cause severe depression in the winter months when the light is not as bright or as long in duration.

I have it pretty bad and turn into a scrooge, depressed ass, usually at the end of November. I actually made it till the second week of this month this year before it set in! Lucky me

When does it start for you...if you have it?

It depends on the level of sunshine and length of days in your area. It is no surprise that SAD starts to manifest itself when the days start to get shorter and the weather is cloudier. If you have SAD, moving can be a good idea. Check into the number of sunny days in the area you plan on moving to. Some areas of NM have over 300 days of sunshine. Of course, if you live in northern Alaska, they have several weeks of darkness or partly dark days, not a good place if you have SAD unless you have a full-spectrum light.

With my luck Blondie....I'd move to NM and get skin cancer.

Seriously.....if I get bad enough this winter.....I'm going to look into the light therapy. Either that, or start an indoor crop and spend time under the lights watching them grow

I've heard great comments from people who've used that special lighting that Blondie mentioned. If anyone on the board has used them, it'd be great to hear how it affects them.

Sorry to hear about your SAD case, gumby... you warned us about it awhile back, as I recall. At least it kicked in later than normal...

BTW...I always look forward to Dec. 26 or so... that's when I KNOW the days are slowly going to get longer.

Gumby, Since I'm 'a man of all seasons' it's constant. No, just kidding. Yes, its been said that sunlight plays a crucial role in people's lives. I guess you're talking about seasonal 'mood' swings. Personally, I enjoy the 4 seasons. I seem to flow or adjust to seasons. I do dislike hot, hot weather, not steamy women though.

I've been to Hawaii at least eight times. I found to much sunlight got to be boring for me, believe it not. I don't doubt that mother earth with all its power and its make up, play a crucial role in our mood swings. As long as those mood swings are positive, I'll just keep swinging.

My wife has the problem you've mentioned. I guess our body chemistry has a lot to do with it. Have you considered the food that you eat also play a role?

I guess calling us bastards and bastardettes often means your always in this mood. So, what season are YOU talking about? Take this comment with a grain of salt.

    Hi Guest77,

I liked your comment......no problem. I say bastard all the time as you've noticed. How bad does your wife get it when she gets it? Does she get angry or sad.....or both?

    Bebu,

You made me feel good with your comment of remembering I have this problem. I wish I could remember all the people here, and the various problems they have. You can find a lot of info. on the net about this stuff, and the therapy used.

Funny you say this Gumby, this is usually the time of the year I start cheering up and relaxing inside. I'm polar opposite of the entire planet. I get down and depressed during the summer -- too much sunshine and heat. Gets me down and stressed every time.

But cloudy days (especially really dark clouds), rain, cool temps (50s, no more than low 60s) and I'm as happy as a mushroom.

    And yes, I'm weird.

    Gumby,

The days will soon begin to get longer again...

I know someone who found the lamp really helped, I suppose that's the only answer for us brits.

I like Winter - it has its own beauty.
