As mentioned, it seems to work better when you organize one on this board, or at least use the forum as a jumping-off place. I discovered that there were other xJWs from my city here on Simon's board. Also, I was able to reconnect with some people who had been in one of the congregations I was in many years ago. We made arrangements to meet at a restaurant and had a great time. A few more have been added since then, and each time it's been fun. We'll be getting together again in January, and there are different age groups, different marital status, and it's quite informal. Various belief systems: Native spirituality, Wicca, agnostic, Catholicism, etc. I'm hoping that it becomes more of a way to become friends with people and not just a commiserating of our past JW experiences.

I've been to many, and enjoyed every one. Yes, they ocassionally get cancelled, but in order to by-step that, we just started a board from the ones that have gone. This way, even if there are only 2-3 that want to attend, they can still hook-up.
I've made a few cherished friends at the meet-ups I have been to.
