Movies are only rated R in the US. Other countires have different rating systems, so JWs in those countries are likely to have seen them and wonder why the difference in the US.

Yeah in Canada it's usually one rating lower. (We do have an R rating). For example the movie Executive Decision that I saw on tv was rated R in the United States, however when I rented it in the video store it was rated 14A.

My parents were more against the violence than the sex. Not that they put up with either. My sister and I weren't allowed to watch the Bond films, but we were allowed to watch "Dirty Dancing" with my mother's finger constantly on the fast forward button if anything bad came up.

Never understood the reasoning, but man did I learn that "Nobody puts Baby in the corner!"

It's rather funny that JWs avoid R-rated movies. If a film was ever made of the Old Testament, it would be rated X for violence.

I agree with megadude and enishi. But would add 2 X's for explicit sex. (Lot and his daughters, Gen. 19--David?Bathsheba/murder plot---the rape of Tamar by her own half-brother, Amnon.) There were parts in the OT that gave me nightmares. And the story of the nail through the head...damn...the violence would have outdone some of the video games today. No matter WHAT context it's supposedly in. Two younger sisters in our cong took a few of us to see Lady Sings the Blues. When our moms found out, we were in so much trouble. And they were reprimanded. Then I snuck in to see Foxy Brown!! The last scene with the pickle jar will forever remain in my mind!!

Like Blondie mentioned, you will not really find anything in print about this. This is one of those unwritten rules. They will beat the drum from the platform or in private. They don't have it in print because then they can say "we never ever came out and said that".

For better or worse in my country we have a very different rating system. We have suitable for ages above 6, 12, 16 and 18. Also a newer system points to content like: contains swearing, drug or alcohol abuse, sex, violence etc.

However, the implication are that in some congo's some movie is a no-no and in another one can freely watch it. We had once an older elder stating Bond is not for christians. Most JW's here determin for themselves what they'll watch and what not. Some are strict and some are very liberal.

A movie made on the life of Jesus would have to be rated R. I'm curious to see Mel Gibson's new movie about the last day of Jesus.

My wife's JW family came over one day while I was watching Harry Potter on HBO. Some of them sneaked peeks when they could but my mother-in-law huffed, puffed, snorted and rolled her eyes and refused to come into the room while it was on. It's not rated R but it's a JW no-no because of the "demonistic nature" of the film. Now I know how to keep my mother-in-law out of my hair when she's over.

In my old congregation, it wasn't just "R" rated movies that were off limit. Two elder's wives had taken it upon themselves to guard the congregation from the evil Disney Cartoon Movies. I mean what could be more demonic than talking animals with human emotion and mystical creatures like mermaids and magical beasts.

Then there was a specific talk on the Harry Potter movies at my congregation when it first came out and my in-laws got pulled into the back and scolded because it was known that they'd read the books. And when my wife and I took my parents and brother out to see the last Lord of the Rings movie, I asked my brother why he hadn't gone to see this movie with his girlfriend and friends. He told me that witnesses were frowned upon if it was known that they went to see LoTR movies because they were filled with magic and pagan rituals and his friends wouldn't go see it.

I thought that was kind of funny, so I told him that there were plenty of pagan rituals that witlesses still followed and that he shouldn't give his fiance a wedding ring because that was a pagan practice. Then my mom got mad and broke down and cried and asked my wife and I why we weren't going to meetings any more. And that's another story all together.

My family was upset with me for bringing home Pirates of The Caribbean! Please!

I guess I am so "far gone" now it didn't even occur to me they would be bothered by the fact that

Captain Jack Sparrow is a ghost. LOL.........

Was he a ghost? I didn't get to see the end of the movie.

T3 was rated 12A over here in the UK which meant that anyone could see it but under 12s needed to be with an adult.

Most R rated films are given 18 or 15 ratings over here. 18s are frowned upon but I don't think the majority of the people in my old cong really cared tbh.
