I rarely agree with things the French do -- but here I am in total agreement with them

Note that this proposed ban is for public schools. This is interesting, because there was a fight a few months ago, in the Gambia, a mainly Muslim population, where the Christian private schools wanted to stop female Muslim students wearing the islamic headresses and stuff while at school. Lots of skinny girl arm waving over it. But remember, it was Christian mission schools that gave most of what passes for a middle class in Africa their education; the Gambian president himself, although a Muslim, was educated in such a school, and he whole-heartedly approves of their continued existence.

I understand one of the appeals of the WBTS in Africa is that they teach people to read , so that they can participate in Watchtower studies and read the articles.

My take on this is that it is just as bad for France to ban it as it was for the Taliban to enforce it . Either way, the ruling takes away a persons dignity and right to chose. I believe it would cause more harm than good in ethnic relations

Do not forget that the ban would also apply to crosses, unless they are small and discreet .

it all causes a dub I know to claim that they are "Turning on Babylon the Great"

Does that mean the priests and nuns are going to start wearing street dress all the time?

Maybe if they attend public school.

Finally something that Jaque Chriac and John Ashcroft can agree on.

I really appreciate the usual French view (utopy?) on secularism: the society is supposed to be made up of individuals, not communities, and it would be good for the public space to be religion-free. But I fear the present decision will only lead fundamentalist parents to send their children to private, confessional schools, or remove them from any education at an early age, and this will be worse for the children involved. In fact it might result to be a shortcut to the communitarian society we theoretically want to avoid. Or are perhaps Chirac and his team secretly dreaming of a communitarian society?

    Yeah

Those kids need to be connected to the world, and well this decision is very ambarassing !

on the other hand ... what does it take to have them wearing whatever they want ... and at the same time do those kids really want to wear all of THAT ! ... it's all about the PARENTS ... there is not much people here who does that ... but I have to tell that those last few years they are more and more in Paris anyway ... (just because they are more ? or because their is more fanatic ... I don't know ...)
