Went out on every single holiday until I was about 20. Then I "rebelled," and refused to go one Thanksgiving. I told my dad, "okay, I will go, but if I see more than one car in the driveway, or a football game on, I'm not going to knock." He "let" me stay home that day. After that, I continued to go out in service on the holidays for a couple more years, it was such a flog.

We did have a period of a few years when everyone when skiing on xmas day, but even then I can remember my mom traipsing around that stupid lodge with her watchtowers and tracts, looking for someone up there who might not be a JW already. It was kind of hard for her because the mountain was overrun with JW on xmas day. But if it could be done, there she would be with her tracts and her mini bible and some poor unsuspecting person cornered so she could tell them about the Kingdom.

Barf. If that didn't work, she's start scoping the lodge out for an especially clean cut young JW boy that she could corner and lecture on endlessly about how he needed to apply to Bethel, and how that was really the only thing a young man should do if he "made the truth his own." BTW, if there are any of you out there who my mom had this conversation with... I'm waaaay sorry, buy HEY you're reading this, so it's all good right? LOL

The society really loved to prove a point back in the "good old days" It didn't matter to them if people were having a good time at Xmas, thanksgiving or halloween, we were going to get out there and convert those sinners. We knew and were told that those days were of no importance. If we stayed home then it would be like saying that those days were special and we couldn't have that, could we.

So, not only could you not enjoy the holiday as it could have been enjoyed, or just had a normal day, you had to dread the holidays. I think I need to go barf somewhere.

Well, at least the poor dubs have a reprieve of sorts.

No. I was one of the deadbeats who took my family to the movies and Waffle House to eat afterwards ( these were the only things open on Christmas ). I would have felt I was being obnoxious to knock on doors during Christmas. We liked having a day off and to spend it together.

I must say that in our Dec KM there is a plan for dec 25/26 and jan 1/2 special witnessing.

A few years back I was with a group of fellow duds, most of whom where Aux Pio. and they were whining about getting their hours. And since it was December I STUPIDLY asked if any where planning to go out Christmas I would work with them. The looks I got where akin to, "Have you lost your mind!" When I was driving home I realised that I was happy no one wanted to take me up on my offer. I am such a goof! Maverick, That was the last time the subject of Holiday Pestering ever came up!

Or maybe even worse yet, having an evening meeting to go to hanging over your head on a ``worldy" holiday!

And of course, they were none too happier when we smiled and replied' "Well, we think that of all days to talk about Jesus, this one would certainly be appropriate!" Then we would go back to the car and make cracks about how worldly people didn't even want to talk about Jesus on their own dumb holiday for him, while secretly heaving a sigh of relief that it was over.

    yikes deja vu

My worst service memory must be hawking the magazines on the street in front of a waterpark in orlando....just what every wet tired tourist wants....JW's nagging them and trying to give them "reading material"

I can remember the reasons that holdiay witnessing was supposed to be advantageous:

    People will be home (true)

They will be receptive to the Bible message about Christ (hah!)

Usually some elder would be stuck with conducting the meeting for service. I always wondered if they drew straws or if the one with the least seniority was stuck. His family was never with him. Sometimes it was an eager beaver MS trying to get his elder stars. After he had formed car groups, he would disappear quickly.

Notice how they pushed books about Jesus at this time. In the days when they asked for donations/charged, the NWT was pushed (as a Xmas gift idea indirectly) up until 1985 in December and starting in 1986 in November.

Jesus! It must be easy to prepare KM articles. It looks like you just take an old issue and do a Save As and then change a couple of the headlines, add a word here, subtract a word here...maybe throw in a little bit of odd punctuation just for that 'spiritually unique' flavor...And Boom! KM de la mes.
