"How are you?" is a greeting, not a question. It's not selfish that people don't want to hear a laundry list of complaints and negatives. It doesn't mean they're selfish. Actually, I'd say the selfish one would be the one that complains and complains, not caring what effect they're having on someone else's day.\

I see most religous people in the world giving there time or money because it gives them a sense of euphoria, or joy. They can look back at the end of the day and say," damn, I'm a really good person.. I'm righteous and god loves me for it!!" I don't find that a selfless act....they're getting something in return.. They are paying for that joy!

Am I more of a giver than a receiver? I'd still have to say yes.. Now though, I give to my friends out of a sense of obligation when they need my help. Do I give my money or time away to strangers? NO!!!!!

On the receiving end, my friends have helped me on occasion, but I have a lot of pride in myself, and am a very self sufficient person. I never take handouts, and don't expect them.

i was going to say exactly the same thing!!! except i wouldn't limit that statement to inlcude only religious people. i think everyone's motives can often be largely self-concerned. i completely indict myself on this count. i donate to charity but i do it because feeling like i'm doing some small part to right a wrong or help the needy is gratifying to me. i don't think there's anything wrong with that. there is always a payoff.

When I contribute to a cause, I don't feel euphoric or special to God. Even when I was a practicing Witness, I felt nothing but a bit guilty if I forgot to donate some dough.

so your payoff was not feeling guilty. there's nothing wrong with a payoff.

I think you are talking about a BORE here, Min. People that dominate conversations, never allowing others to get a word in edgewise. People that hijack conversations & are masters at manipulating the conversation right back to THEM. Personally, I avoid them.

I prefer a few good friends to a bunch of hangers on that I can't count on.
