I like the SB, and it has helped my hubby a lot. (15#) but it made me a bit ill. Too much protein. I have diabetes type 2 and losing weight is going to be hard. But the SB is great, except i have to go with less protein. Otherwise it is good for me too.

Totally agree, after 40-50 no one looks good with too little weight on them.

Steve has lost 30 pounds since September 1. He carried most of his excess weight around his belly and the book promises you lose belly fat first. It really is an amazing thing to watch. He has lost all that belly fat and went from size 36 baggy Levis to size 33 snug 501s. Yowza! He also went back to the gym twice a week and swims laps two or three mornings a week for an hour. Exercise definitely helps the weight come off quicker and has it's own benefits!

Kate, I've already told Mulan this. The first week was really rough for him. He missed the "lift" you get from carbs. I looked over the list of foods he could eat and realized I could add lentils and black beans to his diet legally. I began cooking a big pot of lentils or black beans or chili so I could pack it in a thermos for his lunches. It made a huge difference for him and we got used to having them with dinner all the time too. We've kind of gotten off a bit with the holidays but will start back up Monday. I still eat the carbs because I'm putting so many miles in running but I've switched to whole wheat pasta and brown rice exclusively. I gave all my white rice to Mulan. We eat multi grain hot cooked cereal for breakfast occasionally with syrup (Steve uses sugar free). I cook a lot of eggs and canadian bacon and can only say "Thank God for Costco!"

Every week I buy a package of fresh chicken breasts and grill them without the skins. He eats one in his lunch every day. I also pack a small package of beef jerky, Costco sells a 12 pack of 1oz bags for $9. I fill his thermos (about 10oz) with beans of some sort. I make or buy hummus and pack a small amount in a tupperware for him to dip red peppers and celery in. I put a small tupperware with about 15-20 dry roasted almonds (Costco). I also mix white albacore tuna with light mayo and sweet pickle relish and pack that in a small tupperware for him. Top that off with a Zone bar and it's absolutely a ton of food and that is just lunch. Keep in mind his activity level is high but still! He lost weight eating this every stinking day. Breakfast is typically two eggs and three slices Canadian bacon. Dinner is a huge salad and grilled meat of some sort with beans.

I bought the ricotta cheese thinking we'd eat the desserts in the book. The night we ate it for the first time we also coincidentally came down with a lovely stomach flu. Never could stand the thought of eating it again. I buy a big box of sugar free fudgecicles at Costco by Healthy Choice. We eat those for dessert or you can buy sugar free/low fat or fat free ice cream and have that. Might not be until the second week so you should check. I highly recommend stocking your freezer with the fudgecicles and sugar free popcicles. Gets you through some cravings.

This seems to be the best diet he has tried. If you read the book it makes so much sense and like Mulan mentioned earlier, he lowered his cholesterol 27 points in three months with this diet an exercise.

Good luck and feel free to call or PM or email me with questions!

    Mulan,

I'm like you. I need to lose some weight. I've been exercising three times a week, and have lost inches, but did not get the overall results of weight loss that I'd hoped for. I'm not giving up, but it really is true, that we women do have an uphill battle after we reach menopause. Our metabolism changes and those hereditary genes kick in.

Although I'm not much for "diets" per se, I am going to take a look at this one. The Adkins diet seemed unhealthy to me, and like someone said, it puts too much stress on the body. A lot of people do the Adkins diet where I work. They lose lots of weight, but as soon as they stop, they put it back on. Yo-Yo dieting is very unhealthy they say.

I'm adjusting to the fact that I will be weighing more in my elder years, but I would just like to carry a bit less around. My cholesterol needs to come down a bit too and I have decided not to take medications for these things. You will have to let us know how it goes. I've been sick since Friday, and have only had hot tea and toast, so I've probably lost a couple pounds. (This isn't what I had in mind though.)

I am on a prime -rib and bourbon diet -- especially after the media hyped BSE scare --need to show my support for the midwest farming industry -- high protein works well for getting weight off quick -- need to drink plenty of water also though.

My parents have both used this diet with some great success.

My father is 61 and is now back to the 165 lbs he weighed when he married my mom.... However, my dad was never really overweight in my book, he hid it well, but what was more scary was his high blood preassure. It just came out of nowhere it seemed, and he was taking medication to correct it, but he hates taking pills, and would sometimes try to avoid taking it--which annoyed me. However because of this diet he no longer needs to take his medication. Just with the diet and running on the treadmill every day he has lowered his blood pressure to the normal range.

My mom who is 56 had adult onset diabetes. While the diet has not removed her need take insulin entirely it has really helped her bloodsugar numbers. They have been great lately. She hasn't lost as much weight as my dad, (curse those men for always being able to lose weight faster then us women). But she is sticking to it.

The diet isn't bad. Some of the recipies seem kinda whacky--but a few of them were really delicious. Some of them were scrapped outright--lol...but all in all I think my older parents have been really pleased with the results, my father especially.

I think this diet is more about eating healthy and being healthy than weight loss. I believe as the doctor said, he was looking for a diet to help his heart patients that was heart healthy--beacuse the Atkins is not at all, it was just a side-effect that that they ended up losing so much weight on the diet.

I wish you success Mulan, and the others who are trying this diet. I think it sounds like a good plan.

    Hi Marilyn,

My father started this diet in August and lost a lot of weight. He loves to eat food and couldn't stick to any other diet. It's healthy and doesn't leave him hungry at all. Good luck and let us know the results.

    Hi Mulan...

I went on the atkins beginning in July and lost 25 lbs.. and felt great...

However, I wouldn't recommend the 1st phase of the Atkins diet for prolonged lengths of time...

Now I seem to have found my balance and stay away from MY fat maker foods..Bread, pasta and potatoes... and that seems to work for me...

I would like to have a look at the South Beach... I'll try that clicky button someone posted...

    Good luck all..

    sincerely

    Special K

I didn't try any of them. I found this diet really easy to cook normally. I was going to try the "mashed potatoes" (actually cauliflower) but Steve just said no.

I've been seriously considering this diet too. Didn't someone just post about being on it here and losing on it a couple weeks ago?

What is the biggest difference between this one and Atkins? I found I didn't lose with the Atkins for some reason.

I used to make that all the time, Rachel, when you were little. It was an old Weight Watchers recipe. I don't think you kids realized it wasn't really mashed potatoes. Of course you put gravy on them. I didn't.

Weight Watchers doesn't work for me anymore. I went on it earlier this year, and lost about 8 or 9 pounds, and then nothing more would let loose. After the reading I've been doing, and all the stuff on TV this week, about dieting, I am wondering if I am headed for Type 2 Diabetes. It sure sounds like me, and the difficulty losing weight because of the insulin factor.

I also need to take a strong Chromium supplement, which I haven't done for a very long time. Chromium helps convert sugars (and carbs) to glycogen so the body can use them, instead of storing them as fat, and it also almost eliminates sugar cravings. That part is probably why I haven't thought to take it again................I LOVE sweets, of all kinds.
