I guess it taught me something very valuable about message boards. That people can and will lie and fake others out.
I also think it could and happen on former Jehovah's Witnesses boards.
IT DOES.

Oh my god, Smyler, that was a horrible chat log to read. What is wrong with people? Cheering him on, daring him to do more? Really, it was a devastating thing to read.
Welcome to the zoo! Yes, the zoo is composed of all kinds of animals. All animals have different temperments and behave differently, don't they? You just gotta watch out for them jack-asses.

There have been cases on wing of madness of people faking they're own suicides. This has happened several times.
this is of course a negative thing, but there is also something positive here..
Before they knew it, they had messages e-mailed to them, flowers sent, and even calls to the house. As people were so touched, that they wanted to do something.
what I see, although a shame that they were duped, is the fact that total strangers can care. Can take the time reach out to help someone. I see it every day right here. Someone will have a bad day and put in a post and you will see several posts from friends saying "You have a PM" or "I am going to call you". We've even had on the board friends who have traveled long distances to help another friend out. If you ask me, that is really awesome.
I recall on another board telling my story of being DF'd for "dissobedience to my parents" and another poster who was inclined to support the elders and FDS was adamant that I was lieing. Nothing I could say could convince him that such things happen and that there were/are terrible abuses of personal power in the JUU's. He became so frustrated with the stories of others confirming that it was not uncommon he left in a twit. I would not be offended if someone pulled my leg about themselves and their health matters. My investment would be social and emotional, something we mostly all have plenty to share. So it is squandered on one out of a thousand, not too bad, I'd say.

wow, smyler....such a sad, horrible story....i can't believe those chat logs. it makes me sick.
There has been some real beauties that have posted here too, do a search.....
Regarding Minimus? comments, he is correct. However, I feel we could also be more tolerant, and polite, to active Jws (and Christians in general) that post here.
Oh my. Smyler. I cannot believe those chat logs. How tragic. Please everyone be careful with what you say. I'd rather be nice to someone I thought was a troll than have a story like that happen. So sad.
