French Press Not Objective in US Iraq War

I find it highly ironic that the liberal left AND the conservative right both blame the press, often the same sources, for being controlled by the right or left.

Growed Up: thanks for adding clarification. I do agree that it is very unwise to select one source for news and information, whether political or otherwise. I have recently stated this opinion when posting in another thread. Most network sources present information biased to the slant of their operation (whether liberal, conservative, etc.)

A wise and informed party reads or listens to reports from various sources on a single topic, obtaining a lot of information to weigh and consider and ultimately form an opinion that probably combines views from all areas.

Personally my favorite sources include NPR, the BBC, International newspapers (both country of origin and Int'l Herald Tribune). These combined with the soundbites our local networks, FOX and CNN provide us help to frame a less distorted picture, although frankly I don't spend a lot of time on televised news reports, preferring print sources such as newspapers and magazine coverage which is typically more comprehensive in its research and reporting.

Many Americans tend to rely solely on their favorite network and would be surprised if they look further to form opinions. Possibly also surprised to hear non-US views on major US issues and topics.

As far as the topic of this thread, IMO French Press is no less objective than American Press for all of the obvious reasons.

Lastly, regarding your thoughts on the liberalism of the media...I'm neutral. Dependent on the media source I believe it varies. For instance looking at radio...I believe weighted towards conservatives; newspapers I think find a balance (usually there are a comparable number of liberal and conservative, but I agree can vary regionally)..., zines I believe again fairly equal. Mainstream t.v. I agree is slightly more liberal, but what one receives is so edited that what you get isn't useful for being fully informed.

So I think it depends on how much effort one is willing to put in to being completely informed on the issues. Unfortunately I think individuals gravitate towards sources that reflect their individual biases and thus use that information to validate their position.

thanks for sharing your thoughts and I think it is always interesting to ponder this topic.

I agree with you that it is human nature for people to gravitate towards news sources that most reflect their own world views. However, as an individual, I do look at other points of view and have recently begun reading foreign news sources, as well. In fact, where possible, when given the option to chose an American source or a foreign source to back-up a point, I will use the foreign source, as I feel it lends more credibility towards whatever view I am pontificating on at the moment! That said, even with competing view points, I will admit that although I now see some things differently than I did a few months ago, I still have my conservative slant - and probably always will. At any rate, I think the point that we both agree upon is that there is no one source that is completely balanced. If there were, we would see an hour of Katie Couric followed by an hour of Rush - and we both know that ain't gunna happen!

    Anyway, nice chatting with you!

No worries! I didn't. Besides, even if you did, you owed me one over my "opinions vs. facts" comment on another thread. Sometimes I get a little carried away, but truly don't mean anything by it. Friends?!

Actually, I'm not a former cult member - by the skin of my teeth. My mother and step-father have been in the borg for 40 years. I grew up with my dad so I didn't have to live it 24/7/365. However, it affected me and my brother, and I watch it continue to affect my parents to this day. At any rate, I'm sorry you did have to live it! Does empathizing count?!

If anyone seriously imagines that the US press was objective then ... well, does anyone want to buy London bridge from me?

We watched it when we were over there and it was a complete joke.

LOL ... talking about objectivity ... so only one thing :

first of : LA GUERRE A OUTRANCES exactly MEANS : WARS IN EXCESSES and NOT WAR OF INSULTS or something like that (to be very precise with the way you should understand the message)

Tchi-chi The book, published Oct. 15, charges French reporters were more patriotic than journalistic and what was written amounted to disinformation.

Oh !!!! ... NOT THERE CHOICE Being patriotic !!! OK lets talk about the right of information.

Know that French journalists was not allowed (non officially) and that your militaries played games with them to put them in trouble (DO YOU KNOW THAT !!!) Only a few "chosen" onces was "allowed" being allowed or not is a problem in the matter of right of information (if you chose the journalist there's a probleme) .

Patriotic NO poor them ... KAMIKAZE cause they wanted to know and to do the same job as those chosen, they had to take way more risks (a few died you know - to give us the truth because your militaries made the situation worse for them - DID YOU KNOW THAT ??? ... Cause I really feel to say a real BAB WORD "*******" here !!!

Everything is allowed to your gov ... even fooling you ? ... well sorry coun't ME OUT of the puppets !
