I'm sorry Brumm. If there was a way to get her down to Texas, I guarantee there would be lots of folks here who could take care of her.
My Sister in law is stranded in New York...gulp

If Crownboy could see this, he could be of some assistance I'm sure, if it is needed. I can vouch that he is a genuinely nice guy. Also, NY44m (?).
To set your mind at ease, NYC is not so bad. The timesquare area has been cleaned up alot since the days when it got it's bad reputation. I consider NYC one of the great vacation spots.
Just think back to how well the city weathered the blackouts a few months back, that should really set your mind at ease.
Sorry for her trouble though, what a sucky friend.

ps. I was there this time last year. Times square had 300,000 people, if I recall correctly. It boggled the mind. We ended up at 42nd, but about 8 blocks towards the water. It was still exciting, and we could see some of the fireworks. If she wants to get into Times Sqaure, she should get there early in the day and camp out.
The more I think about this, she should take advantage of it, get out. Times square especially is not dangerous, it's totally tourist. Of course she'll want to get a good feel for how to get around, and not walk around in victim mode, but look purposeful as she moves about, she'll be fine. People in the shops are very helpful with directions and advice.
I wish I was there!

Brummie isnt Darlene or Roberta near there? I know John lives in NY but he has only a small apartment & has just had a back operation. Tough on her... not a very nice friend to leave her alone.

hi brummie --
i am not in nyc, but not too far away either. your sister-in-law should take advantage of this situation -- she does not need to be unduly afraid -- nyc really does suffer from too much negative media pr. just tell her to be as cautious and alert as she would be anywhere --.
that having been said - nyc is a GREAT place to be. not to sure if i would want to be in times square at new years, -- don't like crushing crowds much, but nyc is FULL of extra security right now, air protection, etc... many many police everywhere. it is an exciting wonderful place. tell her to catch a movie or a play or go to a museum. chill out and enjoy!
best wishes -- happy new year -- nowisee

Hi- Im the NYC expert- In NYC we have a saying.
"Welcome to NY. NOW GET THE F**K OUT!"
all kidding aside NYC has been the safest its been in years! for many hardcore new yorkers
like myself, we are saddened that times square has lost its flavor but instead has become
a sort of Disneyland of sorts for tourists. your sister is more likely to run into someone from
Nebraska than NYC in times square. No true new yorker would be caught dead in Times square
for new years. Tell your sister to go to TDF and get some discount broadway tickets. Tell
her to take in a show at carolines.
I would tell her to hit some clubs and lounges but we dont want to turn them into webster hall now do we?

Mike! I was just thinking of you! Couldn't you hook up with this young lady and show her around and provide her with a bit of company, if only for a day or two? As a favour to us at the board? Pretty pleeeease??

how can it be, MYC, mother of the WTS, has no apostates in it? Would seem there must be a whole hive there somewhere. I believe the advice given is good, pretty much the same i would give for Dallas, except in Dallas, AVOID LOWER GREENVILLE AVE..

I gotta agree with Mike Musto...unless you're running down Bedford Sty at 2 AM NYC has REALLY become a safe place to be. Your Sis-in-law should get out and enjoy herself...SHOP SHOP SHOP! I had planned to go to NYC originally this New Year...wish I had now. Times Square is a must for any tourist...also...send her to the Ed Sullivan theatre...home of David Letterman (Love his humor), also...send her by the folks at FOx News.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
