Orangefatcat... Jim Penton is a professional historian. Properly researching and writing an academic book takes a lot of time and effort (and often, a grant of funds to support the work). I'm sure that when the book comes out, it will be worth the wait.

Because Jim asked Larc to write a preface for this upcoming book, I was privy to reading a recent draft. While I don't feel free to reveal any 'juicy' tidbits, I can say the documentation is flawless, and only intensified my already extreme dislike for Rutherford and his self-serving manipulations. Jim writes it in his usual scholarly and flawless adcademic style,from the perspective of a trained historian. I can't wait to see it in print. For those interested in the deep historical workings of the organization, well, you won't be disappointed. I was left with the impression that Russell was almost 'saintly' compared to the hedonistic Rutherford...a man whose every move was calculated for his own grandiose ideas and ego. And, it is no wonder that the governing body of the WTBTS is just a reflection of their true 'founder' - Rutherford.

I forgot that Jim wrote"Jehovahs Witnesses In Canada" a book praising the JWs when he was one. It was while I was a JW in good standing I read it. I mentioned to the elder it was a wonderful book & I intended to write him( Penton) I did not know him then.The elder told me that would not be a good idea as he had become demonized......I had already written the letter & I left it on top of my cupboard to pray weather to send it or not. I thought if I sent it -it might make the "demons" leave him ( DAH!!!!Well I did send it. !!!! I never told anyone though I figuered Jehovah knew -no need to tell men..)...Well the rest is history- A J.Poole answered me.... I found out I knew him in Montreal....He told me a few "truths" .....I mentioned to the "brothers" I didnt believe in 1914- & I got the left foot of fellowship right out the Kingdum Hell... NERVE!!!!

I wonder if anyone at Bethel thought about assassinating JFR? You were 6 when he died, eh, Frank? Did you hear any JFR stories later on?

Apart from being a first class researcher and historian Mr. Penton's strength is his scholarly and academic approach to a subject into which he could justifiably have injected much emotional ire. That the WTS has continued to allow the demonization of his reputation and name over decades without Mr. Penton resorting to emotional tirades in his writing, shows much more about the WTS than it does Jim.
An example. A few weeks ago I was discussing various issues with a JW elder who still speaks with me. Penton's name came into the conversation. "Oh, he thought too much of himself!', the elder declared. I asked, 'Really? Have you met him?','No, but my father told me so.' I replied, 'Really? Has you father met him?' - 'No, but his friend has'.
This is typical of how the WTS primes its adherents to demonize it's critics - death by gossip.

The old JW/WTS gossip mill, you can never find the beginning. I used to be told that are 3 methods of transmitting information but the last one is fastest (if inaccurate)
