During the Bobby Fisher era Bethelites were playing chess so much that the Society came up with some articles which discourages chess likening it to a game of war, soon thereafter bethel bros stopped p[layngchess and many bros stopped plaing it or cut down on it because of their"Christian trained concience"

Wow! I have never heard that! But the saddest thing about it is that I don't doubt it at all. But I figured the reason was going to be something about one of the pieces being called a "Bishop."

Oh, I remember about 5 years ago (maybe less) my parents wanted to buy the Hercules video for my kids. My wife wouldn't hear of it. She said the Greek 'gods' would confuse the children's knowledge of god. It was animated for cryingoutloud! (my kids were 9 and 7)

I collect and make Chess sets. We used to play at some get-togethers. Our group was told it was a conscience matter, and we verbally agreed on the spot that our consciences would allow us to play.

I watched Hercules with my nephews, liked it. The ending made me cry. Am I sappy or what?

As for the WTS making mistakes, I think they ARE a mistake. If we learn from our mistakes then the time was not all wasted.

Really? i never heard of the chess thing, used to play it a lot in my family (almost all males where/are elders). That's insane!

The Society did a flip-flop on this one. In the 70's chess was a game of war, but a later Awake (I think sometime in the 80's) said it was an acceptable form of recreation.

I guess Jehovah changed his mind !!!
