This is our third serial killer suicide in a decade. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3391977.stm

There is a school of thought that says that it's the inevitable result of remorse burning through the denials and justifications that are a feature of a serial killers mind. Or maybe it's the realisation that the control that is such a feature of a serial killers psyche, is never going to be allowed to operate again.

Somehow I can't help but wonder if these suicides aren't actually quietly allowed to happen?

third? Who were the other two? I remember the guy who killed all the kids at the school in scotland but cannot remember any other serial killers other than the guy that went nuts in Hungerford in the 80's and killed a load of people with an AK 47 (Micheal Ryan I think?)

I've just read the article and it mentions Fred West, I'd forgotten about him. So who's the third, I guess the guy in Scotland doesn't count as a serial killer as it all happened in one episode

Sorry, I've just read the story more closely, I didn't recognise the Akinmurele case.

So has Shipman evaded justice or has he done the noble thing?

I'm opposed to the Death Penalty, as, if killing is wrong, killing is wrong.

However, I'm by no means opposed to people condemned to real-life imprisonment offing themselves, provided it is a genuine suicide. Hell, life is a right and being able to end your life is a right (as far as I am concerned).

They should be able to apply, be screened by psychiactric staff, and then provided with the means to exit.

Save a lot of time and trouble, and money.

I completely agree with Abaddon. The only issue here is that the families of his victims never get an answer to how or why their loved ones died

The prison service have "suicide watch" for those who are suspected of being suicidal, but apparently Shipman seemed happy as larry. He was a true psychopath and probably all the emotions he seemed to display were an act, he probably felt nothing much at all emotionally.

I say "Good" because I don't like seeing someone who has killed over 200 people having the luxuries they give in prisons these days. Just look at bloody Moira Hindley getting her degree paid for.....I wish someone would pay for mine!

Sorry Mike, but I take offence at that. I work in a maximum security prison, the same as Wakefield prison holding the same type of inmates, and work a lot of night patrols. Most of these things happen in the long quiet nights so we're ussually the ones who find them and have to deal with the situation. we often have the choice of risking our lives opening a cell door to try and save their lives(possibly with another 11 people in the dormitory threatening to kill you if you go in), or waiting for backup to make it safe for you by which time the person will certainly already be dead. Because of the circumstances sometimes you can't go in, or when you find them its too late(It only takes a few minutes to kill yourself) and that haunts you for a long time, you wake up in the middle of the night seeing them hanging there, going over everything in your mind thinking what you could have done to save them. I've lost count of how many people I've resuscitated, but theres only been one who was already dead when I found him. I've had people reconise and stop me in the street, thanking me for saving them because they were now glad they were not able to carry it through. Mike, I think you're a really good bloke, a real nice person, but I think your out of order saying that about prison staff. And with the 11 people in the dormitory I called their bluff and went in, nothing happened to me and I cut that person down and got them breathing again, is that just quietly allowing them to happen?
