I think there are better, more worthwhile things that the money could be spent on in the greater scheme of things rather than lining the pockets of some government departments and contractors.

The technology spin-offs are often touted as a benefit of the expenditure on space but how about directy funding research? It would be more cost effective IMO.

I think the future of space exploration is robotics ... imagine what the QRIO will be like in 10 years time

I disagree. You're either with us or you're with the robots.

I think exploration is awesome. I love technology. I love that we just sent a laptop to a target 100 million miles away, slammed it into the ground at 40Gs, and unfolded it to reveal a still-perfectly-functioning robotic golf cart. That's human ingenuity at a very high degree.

I know that we have problems on earth that require urgent attention, but if we were to take the stand that pure science should not advance until all social ills are cured, we would have almost no technology, and I don't think our social state would be much different.

In my mind, the validity of this specific mission is somewhat in question. It will require immense rockets, which are very expensive and wasteful. I understand the concept of the moon as staging ground for a longer mission. But in my mind, our money would be much better spent developing new and better propulsion technologies, like the ion engine. And, I have to say, I am totally pumped about the space elevator, which will enable us to build Star Trek Enterprise -class ships in space and go on much longer manned missions. (see reference: http://www.isr.us/SEHome.asp)

All in all, I'm happy about all the positive press NASA has been getting. Science and technology is cool. Human minds create really awesome things. Let's do it!

We need more crack ho welfare babies.

The govenment ought to be providing free haircuts!

Mars will just have to wait until Red China is ready to go there.

    Oops!

Loads of jobs will come from the space ventures.... which means more tax money to pay for welfare babies and social stuff. I have friends on the JPL/Mars Lander project, I wish I had jumped into it.
