CJ, that was funny. Now I'm going to have that running through my head when I'm unraveling the thousands of wires behind my TV.

    Thanks Dave. I'll try this.

One question: I have a DVD recorder, so would this allow me to record programs from both DVD and VCR?

    I make things hard don't I?

Tex, You might want to try contacting the Sony tech support folks. They're pretty good about walking you through things. They helped me hook up that infrared thingie for my digi cam. :)

OK A DVD recorder. (smart move btw)

That changes the setup slightly as you will want the ability to record on the DVD from DirecTV and the VCR (transfer VCR to DVD)

Connect your DirecTV signal to the VCR input.

Then connect the VCR output to the DVD input. (so you can tape from VCR and DirecTV to DVD)

Then connect the DVD output to the TV input.

Both the DVD and VCR may have to be turned on for the signal to reach the TV, and or have to be in the channel 2 or 3 setting.

Alternatively, you can buy a new TV, which will have a kazillion video and audio inputs that allow you to conect everthing directly to TV. They come with a remote control, that will control every appliance in the house, except for the garbarator. Ironically, the remote contol comes with a DVD, that explains how to program and use, so then you're back to square 1. How do I connect this thing to my TV?

    Get behind me Satan!

Actually my accountant (Nina) has forbidden such talk until we get some debts paid off. So I'll be good.

    Thanks a million Dave!

Not only am I a computer idiot, I'm a video idiot as well, so Mike I didn't understand what an scart is.

Maybe what I need to do is pay for a couple of tickets for you and HL to fly over to Dallas and show me how to hook the thing together.

However, to keep myself safe from electrocution or otherwise blowing up my TV, I've printed off this thread. I have a feeling Joy gave the best advice: wait for Jackson to grow up and let him figure it out!

You might need an A/B box (switch from A to B).... I got a DVD for Christmas and I'm going to Radio Shack... I've been told that that have a Master "box" that you hook everything into and that hooks into the TV.

If I remember correctly, USA products don't have SCART, it's a European thing.

    Try http://www.dvdrhelp.com/ .

It's a general mutimedia disc site I used to refer callers to as a learning resource when I did technical support for video editing software.

    It's not specifically for DirecTV, but this;

    http://www.google.com/search?s=main&as_q=DirecTV&SUBMIT=Search&domains=www.dvdrhelp.com&sitesearch=www.dvdrhelp.com&safe=off

... shows some stuff that might answer your question.

    All the best
