    G'day all,

So how's this weekend going for you? Mrs Ozzie and I have just enjoyed an Indian curry and are feeling glowing! We didn't even have a shiraz!! (Will beer do?)

We thought that we might reminisce over the Dubs' attitudes to helping people in the community, so this weekend's poll question is:.....(drum roll)..........

When a dub, what did charity mean to you?

    1. A girl's name!

    2. Something other people do.

    3. Selling the Watchtower and Awake! magazines.

    4. Field service.

    5. Reading how "the Organisation" helps "the brothers" in disasters.

    6. Brag that "the Organisation" helps "worldly people" in disasters.

    7. Giving the magazines away free.

    8. Offering a tract.

    9. Helping on a "quick build".

    10. Other (please detail)

Well, that will probably prove illuminating!! So, settle back with a cuppa and get your replies in. We'll be 'listening'!

    Enjoy.

    Cheers, Ozzie

    P.S. Mrs Ozzie says hi!

For me it was #2, something other people do.

The JW's taught me that all charitable works were inferior to teaching someone their "kingdom hope" which supposedly could lead to hope & everlasting life for the listener.

There was no time for charitable works when your time was nearly 100% consumed by running on the Watchtower treadmill.

    10. Other: Charity begins at home.

Something other poeple do... I actually signed up for charity work as a dub .. and then the elders told me I could better spend my time in field service, cuz that would in fact help people, while visiting the elder people of my town, and helping them out by doing their groceries, didn't.

Stupid me, I listened to the elders ....

    10.

I always contributed to United Way through work selecting organizations that had helped my family through those lean times after my parents divorce.

I sat with a neighbor (non-JW) so her husband could do the grocery shopping, etc., this was a community effort.

I tutored low income children in school subjects.

I was not a normal JW, I guess. I kept it to myself so I would not be "counseled" about it. It's not as if anyone at the KH helped my family out after the divorce.

FYI, I've never been a dub, although I have family in da troof.

I used to sponsor 3rd world children (only a $1 day folks.. plug, plug, plug) and although I never made it a big deal, I remember my Dub-families attitude towards it. "That's not really helping them, only spiritual food will help."

I simply replied, "well... I'll keep them alive until you can save them!"

In reality I was also keeping them healthy, vacinated, educated, safe and company via letters. Join "World Vision" - it's fun and exciting. They are a very open and honest organization. "Little Prabu's Grandfather wrote me a letter from India and told me how he appreciated the new shovels I had helped get for his village." It made me feel like I was right there handing it too him personally!

When I was a dub, it was #1. I had such a crush on a young sister named Charity. Wow! the feelings I get even today when I think about her!

Today, it's #10. I am making up for lost time by doing REAL charitable works in my community.

I always thought our free home bible study program was "our" charity!

Well!! it was my precious time I was spending with people so they could learn "da troof"

*lauging* charitey, sheeesh. The JW's don't know what real love or charity means.

    Definitely:
    4. Field service. (Bible Studies)

    5. Reading how "the Organisation" helps "the brothers" in disasters.

I always told the people who called asking for help, that I was already very occupied in a volunteer work that saved lives. (GAGGGGGG)
