If You Found A Wallet----Would You Turn It In??

Last month, on my way out of Wal-Mart, I dropped my check book. It's not the same as my wallet, but someone could really have wreaked havoc on my life with it. Fortunately, they turned it in to the service desk who called me to tell me. I was fortunate, all the checks and deposit slips were still in it. (I still called my bank to let them know and to ask about what I should do if there were some fraudulent activity on the account.)

With that said, I would turn it in to some sort of authority. It was fortunate that some honest individual had found my check book, so I could not be anything less that that.

Yes, I would turn it in to the police. They would take dowm my name, address, and phone number. If no ID and no one claims within 60 days, I get the money. This happened to me. I got $125.

If there is ID, they will try to contact the person. A coworker turned in a wallet once with $500 cash. The owner gave him $100.

I just imagine how I would feel it I had lost my wallet. I worry more about my CCs and identity.

In my job, I get thousands of wallets and lost items turned in to me. (I work for a public transit system). I keep all cash in the wallets, all credit cards, checks books, i make a honest effort to turn back to its owners. Cell phones, I usually will make a few long distance calls, then I call the owner and tell them thier phone was found on the bus.

    Its, severence pay.

And all lotto tickets are checked out too!

Really? That truely makes me sad. And, it's justified by calling it severance pay... Hmmm... I wonder if the poor folks who's money you take would agree to that line of reasoning?

Oh well, Karma will come back and even the score. Then again, I don't know you except through posts, maybe you've already paid that debt and this is your reward? (Hmmm... you were at Bethel. That's a big something in your Karma credits.)

    Wow.

Maybe I'm naive, but I don't know what to say.

perhaps gmfh is pulling our chain. AND maybe not. IMO there is nothing wrong with taking the cash, but using a phone or otherwise is way illegal and gmfh surely doesn't want to imply, on a regular basis that he is a law breaker to that degree. Fraud sucks and anyone who would use my credit card w/out authorization would get the smackdown. Big T...don't get your chain wanked...AND gmfh isn't pulling our chain the dog help him after he uses my info...*LOL* dude...just don't forget to pay the bills while you're at it...*LOL*

Maybe I didn't explain myself correctly. When I find credit cards, check books and personal items I follow through with the customer in trying to return these items. Same with cell phones. Its just I may make a long distance call "to test" the phone.

You must understand also that by the time wallets are returned to me the cash is usually long gone, either by the bus operator who turned it to me, or the customer who gave it to the bus operator. But in those few occassions that there is money in the wallet, its lunch or soda money!

Just last weekend I helped three customers retrieve lost wallets, bags, and id's. Usually if you look through the items you will always find a phone number to the persons job, home, or doctor/dentists office. Many times they come to give me a reward but I wont take it (against company policy).

By the way I did return a wallet to a young lady with $120 in it. That was hard to do! Usually all I'll take is three or four punk ass dollars!

I've found a couple of wallets. Turned them in. Last time there was money (a tidy sum) in it, and I called the owners and told them (she'd left it outside in the dark in a shopping cart) I'd found it, how much case there was in it, and that I was leaving it with the checkout kid. And told the kid I'd already called the owners.

Yes, of course I would return the wallet unless wait, I found a wallet with a blood card in it. I would just assume this person is already being taken, why not a little more?

Besides, by not returning the wallet I could save their life it they got into an accident and needed blood before they replaced their blood card. It's tough love really, that's all.
