too unbalanced for me, though I did lose about 17 lbs when I did it, but I really did a number on my health.
Now I do kind of a low carb, more protein thing, but about 60 grams/carb a day which is high compared to atkins.

Not on Atkins, but I've been doing Weight Watchers, and that's going extremely well. I joined on August 4, and have lost 81 pounds as of this past Monday evening. I had knocked off 23 pounds prior to joining just by cutting back, eating more salads, etc, so my total loss over the last year or so is 104 lbs.

I did strict Atkins for about three months and lost 25 lbs. Since then I have been on restricted carb but not always low-carb (usually no rice, no pasta, no potato, low sugar, but high fruit and moderate bread), and high protein diet and I've maintained 20 lbs of the weight loss.

No - do not believe diets work -- eat balannced and sensibly and keep calories low with sensible exercise and you will be fine

I was advised at my gym to not do Atkins, as it is not a safe diet for long term.
I am on the South Beach Diet, which is similar, I hear, but is low fat, low dairy and lots and lots of vegetables. Five weeks, 11 pounds. I am thrilled.

ball.
No Atkins - no diet at all - I lost 5 stone (70lbs) in a year by eating low fat and calorie counting, and haven't put a single pound back on.

My husband has been on the South Beach diet since September. He has lost 30 something pounds and lowered his cholesterol 42 points. It works really well for him. He isn't hungry and is still losing weight. I have switched the family to whole wheat flour and brown rice, whole grains etc. No white food. Lots of legumes and vegetables. Sugar free, low-fat fudgecicles are a treat now. Used to be high fat, high sugar ice cream was our treat. It's amazing what you can get used to.

I have never done a strict weight loss diet. What I have done the past few years is more a complete lifestyle change. The 'spirit' or concept behind the Adkins diet is part of that. I have cut back on most carbs, eating fewer breads and pastas. I have gotten into eating other veggies besides potatoes, mostly baby carrots and rutabaga. I mainly eat chicken now, but have to feed the red meat eating carnivoir once or twice a month.
I have cut way back on soda and beer. If I drink soda pop-coke-I go with regular not diet as the synthetic sweeteners noticably affectme. I drink alot of green tea.
What I think is funny is how people will go 'on' a diet, and then stop when they hit their goal. I can't think of doing that for myself, that is why I think of it as a life change, that you stick with.
I am currently at 225-230lbs. I have lost 35-40lbs just changeing my behaviors. I have noticed the last six monthes an acceleration to this. My goal is 190-205. Now I am working on increasing my strength and power.

Atkins absolutely works, but you must not cheat. I lost 32 pounds, and I will do 30 more before I quit.
