Adkins Diet Survey

    Just a thought ...

maybe if the food that most people eat (including so-called 'fresh' vegetables and fruits) wasn't filled with preservatives, antibiotics, trans fats, pesticides and other poisons, people would be a lot healthier.

My father was doing Atkins for a couple of months in the fall, but soon added a more healthy balance of carbs since it was zapping his energy and he felt off-kilter. I don't think it's nutritionally healthy, but otoh, 'healthy' food is a relative term - unless it's chemical-free, is any food really healthy?

btw, I heard that Dr. Atkins had cardio myopathy (heart disease caused by infection, remember the movie 'Beaches'?). If this is what he died from, it has zero relevance to his diet.

I agree. Adkins is a diet to quickly shed the pounds, but is not sustainable. Too much protein will eventually cause distress.

I am a small person by nature, and we are talking heredity also. But I have never fed my kids cereal (you know, processed breakfast cereal).

We do donuts maybe once a year. We avoid processed foods and eat home grown veggies, rice, noodles, deer, rabbit, fish (fresh caught).

We use meat in moderation.. Lots of potatoes and fruit. I make lots of food from scratch.

Despite the heredity factor (most of my extended family are overweight) we are slim and trim.

Convienience foods are a big culprit.

BTW, I use real butter, cheese, yogurt, meat, noodles, potatoes, etc...alot is portion control and moderation. We usually have two meatless dinners per week, so we can enjoy a good steak often.

I try to avoid cheap meats...too much fat, too little nutrition.

    Hi Ruby..

I've had good success with Atkins...

Some people knock it.. but the restrictive Atkins diet is for only 2 weeks and then you start to add a more balanced diet..

I've breezed readins some of South Beach.. and can't really see much difference..

    Sugar busters..same..

The reviews I've read the worst about was Dr. Phils.. One reviewer wrote that why would anyone buy a diet book from someone who is overweight and looks like a walrus.. I did find that kind of funny. Most have found his book to be a new publishing of most other diets like Weight watchers.. lots of tables and facts but with a psychology twist... but he is certainly making the bucks off it and sometimes there is a psychological twist to why we eat or don't eat.

I guess its.. read.. and try what you think will suit you the best.

    sincerely

I don't know if anyone mentioned this but...

Atkins is based on Ketosis, which can make your breath smell and overall isn't good for you. At first you lose water, not fat, and atkins diet says you MUST drink 2 litres of water a day - because of the ketosis.

Then they say you can't eat a lot of fruit - another no no on atkins because you're allowed 20 -30 carbs per day and there are 20 carbs in just 1 apple!! This in itself isn't healthy either.

Not too many carby vegetables either.

I admit, I did atkins a while back and basically I found myself eating salads, eggs, bacon, cheese, butter, full-fat cream and meat meat meat. No fruit (except the odd grape - with 1 carb per grape you can't eat 20 or thats your days limit for food!), no good amount of veggies, no grains, no cereal.

Overall it is unhealthy and scientists claim you lose muscle mass and are eating way too much fat.

Anyway, I'm not condemning anyone who honestly thinks its good for them, I just think that you should look into all sides of the story. I monitor my food in terms of calories and fat content - usually trying to get a 40/40/20 split on carbs/protein/fat. Sometimes I will go less fat if I'm wanting to lose weight. I like being able to eat lots of fruit and veggies, and I love bread.

I thought he slipped on the ice and died of complications from his head injury.

Whoops, am I bad? I guess my selective hearing remembered what poor shape is heart was in and how overweight he was. I'm not an Atkins supporter.

I think it contrary to all good sense.

The South Beach Diet makes perfect sense to me. It's all about controlling insulin. I tended to eat foods that caused me to pump out insulin constantly, which eventually would give me Type 2 Diabetes. I knew that, but continued to eat my cravings. It's like an addiction, and eliminating those foods that feed the addiction was the answer for me. I can't see any drawbacks to eliminating refined carbs, like sugar, white flour, white pasta, white rice, etc. I can have healthier carbs in moderation. I eat tons of vegetables and lots of good protein, so feel wonderful.

By the way the Food Pyramid, another poster mentioned, is terribly outdated and most nutritionists don't follow it anymore. For one thing, they realize dairy is not a requirement (unless you work for the American Dairy Association)

That person would be me Mulan. Though I did not address the South Beach Diet

I responded to the Adkins Diet, which I dont feel is healthy over the long term.

I agree with you over refined carbs. Convience foods are most often deleted of nutrients and filled with bad stuff.

I know..............that's why when I responded I mentioned the name of my diet. I agree with you about Atkins.

I did atkins in the run up to a holiday last year and was successful in losing about 20 lbs. I have since got married and put it all back on, I've also not had any time for exercise which has compounded the problem. The one system I used which I think was really sustainable was the weightwatchers plan, it really changes the way you plan your meals and is not restrictive in the way Atkins is.

There is a front page story in one of the tabloids over here today giving info on how Atkins died and how unhealthy he was.
