    Is there one place in the Bible where we are told to love ourseves?

    Exactly.

    The Bible is the greatest psychiatric book.

    Can you command your wife, your children, your cat to love you? Then, i suggest you pull your head out and get some fesh air, or go see a real shrink.

    Bolero,

    The father of Jehovah was El Elyon, from whom he only received as his part of his inheritance the Hebrew nation. The rest was divided among the other gods.

    Check Deuteronomy 32: 8,9

    Make sure to read the notes that quote the oldest manuscripts.

    Also check the words El Elyon, which means basically, the highest of the gods.

    Or in vernacular: The top dog amongst the gods.

    Hello SS,
    I still don't understand what your point is, nor what you are saying. It is better to write a longer post with more detail than a sentence that has no meaning and saying that I'm crazy and that I need a shrink. What I said is simple, there is nowhere in the Bible where one is told to love oneself. You can ask or command your wife to love you, but you your self are not told to love yourself in the bible. In other words, I can tell my wife and daughters to love me but I'm not telling myself to love myself. Real love is shown when one loves another. That is what love is. John 15:13 "Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends." Is there one single Bible verse where one is commanded to love oneself? John 15:17 "This I command you, that you love one another."

    Did I just read somebody say that they don't have to love themselves 'cause it ain't in the bible? Dude, breathing ain't in the bible either, so maybe you should stop? Thought not.

    Anyone who thinks the bible is a psych manual probably thinks it will help them figure out how to rebuild the heads on their VW SuperBeetle.

    Faraon,
    You are doing eisogesis here in Deut 32 8-9. Reading into the test that simply is not there. Moses here is reminding the Jews of when God seperated the nations and took to Himself a particular person to make His nation of Israel that through that nation the Messiah might come and through that nation all the world might be saved. There is nowhere in scripture that says Israel was given to the Father. It was always His and He separated a portion that He might use to bring His son through.
    Now you mentioned ElElion. Do you mean Elohim From Gen 1:1? That is another name for God. which means strong one. Yahweh, or Jehova, means "I am the one who is", these are names that are given to him, or that He calls Himself. Now the bible says in too many places that that the world and the heavens and everything in them was created by God, Jehovah, ONE GOD The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit. So if He created it, it could not have been given to Him like he didn't own it.
    Gen 12:1 Now the LORD said to Abram, "Go forth from your country, And from your relatives And from your father's house, To the land which I will show you;
    Gen 12:2 And I will make you a great nation, And I will bless you, And make your name great; And so you shall be a blessing;
    Gen 12:3 And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed."

    Now it has been established that Jesus did say this. We all know that. The hermeneutics is in question however. In other words, the text is not the problem because the text has not changed. The problem is with the interpreter

    We don't actually know this, we don't even know that Jesus actually lived. What we do know is that someone wrote that jesus said this. This person may not have even heard jesus right and wrote down what he thought jesus said. Remember:

    Blessed are the cheese makers!!

    Phantom,

    You did read wrong. Noone said (at least I didn't say) that we should not love ourselves. What I'm trying to stress is that love is expressed when one shows it to another. If it is just you in a place where there is nothing. Just a black area, and you don't see or hear anything and that is how you live for 1 yr. and you don't know anything or anybody, who would you love? You can't say yourself because you don't know what love is until after you love someone or something else first. I was stresseing that God is LOVE and that being LOVE is unchanging in His charachter. He has and always will be love. The point is that God The Father, could not have been without God the Son at any point in time or else the Father would have to love Himself and that is not what we are taught. I say, before one can love oneself he must first love another.

    Sargon,

    In this discussion we are presupposing that the Bible and everything in it is historically accurate and inerrant. If you want to discuss the Historicity and its inerrancy, we can start another topic. But just to leave you with a thought. I believe that the holocost(spelling in ?) is historically accurate, however I'm 30 and never lived through it. I know about it from what I've read and seen pics of, and it is true it happened. Now going further back, I believe that Christopher Columbus sailed the seas and landed in the Americas. I believe it happened. I didn't see it, but I read an article and books about historians who wrote about what took place. Back then, there were people who were not into playstation and tv and soccer, football, etc. They just sat there and wrote about what they saw as a hobby. Josephus, who was a jewish historian wrote about Jesus and what He did. He may not have believed that His powers were Godly but nontheless he wrote what happened.
