As a kid I did it because my Old Man demanded it. I stopped in my teens and left home to get away from him.
Did it again for a short while leading up to '75, but that was just to save my butt. You had to "be in before '75 because the door will be shut before then."
I enjoyed the social aspect when country witnessing with good mates, picnic lunches, rivers to swim in etc.
Got growled at once for appearing too jovial while going door to door, someone in an outhouse had let rip with a gale of diarrhea while we were knocking on his door.
I was always relieved when it was My Turn and there was nobody home.
I preached out of habit, fear, peer pressure and to put my time in --I did though feel like I was supposed to be doing what I was doing, though I wasn't ever enjoying doing it .I always felt guilty because I didn't have the right motives in being out there (we were told we preached because we loved God and people--I just didn't feel it). The territory I was in was not receptive at all, nobody was at home and when they were they didn't want any. It was cold and wet and depressing and I wore ugly wool skirts with bulky legwarmers to keep warm.
