Splenda, the low cal sugar substitute

My roommate brought home this new ice cream last night, Dreyers No sugar added, Fat Free Chocolate Fudge sweetened with Splenda. I was intrigued. Chocolate ice cream with no fat and low cal, how good could this taste? I grabbed a bowl and a few scoops and tried it out. It was good, really good, in fact hard to tell the difference between it and real ice cream if not impossible. I felt good about the whole thing, my buddy had a bowl and my roommate ate the rest - he really loves ice cream. We sat down to an evening of network video gaming. I was in my room, my roommate in his and my buddy in the living room. As we started playing and yelling commands and game tactics to each other strange noises and smells started eminating from us. I don't want to be totally scatological about this, but the paint was peeling and the rest was getting blown off. I am not sure if it was the Splenda or something else in the ice cream, but it was biological warfare.

This isn't as bad as Olestra with the infamous 'anal leakage' warning, but maybe a noxious fumes warning would be a good idea.

Was it just us or did anyone else experience this?

I've tried the splenda... they have it here at work next to the coffee in the little yellow packets like the pink and blue stuff.

I've never had any reaction to it, but I've also never used it much.

Maybe there was some Olestra in your icecream?

    Maybe you're lactose intolerant.

I haven't eaten ice cream or drank milk for years. We're talking *toxic* gas.

Splenda is also in Hanes brand soft drinks (health food stores, Trader Joes, health sections in grocery stores), some of the sugar free frozen treats (popsicles, fugdgcicles) and in the sugar free syrups for flavoring coffee drinks. I use it all the time. Low carb too. I think we will see it in more and more things.

Like Dan says. I don't trust anything they say about something that's low fat, low carbs, low anything, produced my mass marketed companies. There's always a price to pay. The Splenda thing.... I dunno. I had some in my ice tea today, but only a dot. Didn't do anything. There's an herb called STEVIA that is seven times as sweet as sugar, and it gives me no wierd problems like that. You can use it to cook, bake, etc. The recipes have to be altered, but it is no-fat, low cal, etc. and it's 100% natural and tastes just like sugar.

Splenda is made from table sugar - three of the oxygen & hydrogen groups in the sucrose molecule are replaced by chlorine atoms. The resulting molecule is not found in nature, so I would expect that the gastrointestinal bacteria that cause flatulence would be as confused about how to metabolize it as your own body would be - that's why it has zero calories - it cannot be metabolized.

Here's a summary of what the Dreyer's website says about it:

INGREDIENTS: skim milk, chocolate fudge swirl (maltitol syrup*, water, cocoa processed with alkali**, modified corn starch, maltitol*, salt, natural flavor, xanthan gum, sucralose (Splenda® Brand), nonfat dry milk), polydextrose*, maltodextrin, sorbitol*, cocoa processed with alkali**, glycerin, whey protein, mono and diglycerides, cellulose gum, cellulose gel, sucralose (Splenda® Brand), carrageenan, acesulfame potassium, vitamin A palmitate

    * Sensitive individuals may experience a laxative effect from excessive consumption of these ingredients.

Contains 100 calories per serving compared to 240 calories in regular ice cream, a 58% reduction. Sweetened with Splenda® Brand. This product contains no sucrose but has lactose (a sugar) from milk and other carbohydrates. Diabetic Exchange = 1 Carbohydrate choice.

Please be sure to check the actual product label since the information contained here may have changed.

I've been using Splenda as a sugar substitute for about a year now. I've never noticed anything "noxious" as a result. Broccoli and cauliflower are a different story altogether though.

You might be lactose intolerant though. Next time try a soy or rice based "ice cream" substitute.

I cannot stomach the stuff. I bought some hot cocoa a couple of months ago that had spleda in it. After drinking a cup I got soooooo sick.

I lived in th bathroom for a couple of days. .

I really don't think its has anything to do with being lactose intolerant. I have the same problem with anything sugarfree (gum, candy, coughdrops, etc.) But splenda was by far the worst experience.

I do agree about Stevia. Great stuff, but not too easy to find, and kind of pricey.
