Great and interesting replies!
Jeff T: my experience was similar and I voted (my one time before becoming a dub) for McGovern, lol.
Simon, your points are very good, especially about being more tolerant. I'm going to keep telling myself that.
I put this thread up then promptly got a cold and have been in bed ever since. Sorry to not respond to it more often. Sniff, sniff.

PS, So you are willing to exclude them? ie. democrats aren't liberal?

They are not equivalent terms.
Many would describe the Democratic Leadership Council, of which Clinton and Gore were members, of being centrist and not liberal. Zell Miller (D-Ga) is definitely conservative.
Arlen Specter is a Republican in good party standing, but is fighting a bitter primary battle for his Senate seat because he is not viewed as a conservative.
Liberal and conservative are descriptions of points on a spectrum or continuum - not party identifications, and not universal touchstones.

Liberal and conservative are good words that have been applied to bad things to make the bad things pallatable.

You mean so that they can be placed on pallets? :)
What are you trying to say? I'm not clear...

Imo, JWs don't often attract the type of person that would be military
My father supposedly quit his career in the navy to join the JW's. No doubt, an exception.

I still cannot get over Dakota Red who told me one of the reasons he (she?) left the JWs was "because they are too liberal." Wow.
There are many conservative ex-dubs out there. Amazing, Farkel, little witch, and a few on the "other" board definitely are on the right side of the political spectrum.

Thanks for your replies. I agree, PS, that the descriptions "liberal" and "conservative" don't have to do with party, but more just of political views in general and there's a wide variety in between.
A side point is that what is viewed as liberal (mainstream) press is really more just a bit left of center rather than true left. This is because it's still owned by the huge 6 or 9 corporations that have it all tied up. It's more the independent media, such as what is on the Internet that represents more to the left side.
Another point about JWs and ex-JWs is that they seem to be (from a sampling on this board and other places) sharper than other religions members. Or maybe it's that anyone who breaks free from a high-mind-control group has their wits sharpened just by doing it.
Hence, they end up a bit more liberal

Hi Bradley,
Our replies crossed in cyberspace. I agree there are many strong conservatives who are ex-dubs, but it still seems to me that the preponderance of us are liberal.
Of course, I live in California, lol.
