I don't see a problem with that statement either. The USA/UK (most powerful alliance) attacked a defenseless nation. How much courage does that take?

He said that like just a few days after 9/11, before we attacked Iraq. Iraq was also not defenseless either, Im not saying they were much of a threat but they were certainly a poweful force in the region.

I want to add one more thing though. I completely deplore this second invasion of Iraq. I consider Bush a war criminal.

    Hi FIL,

Not even the neighboring countries considered Iraq a threat anymore. Iraq was very weakened from the 12 years of sanctions put on it from the UN. They weren't considered a threat by anyone, let alone the USA.

I don't remember the context of Bill Maher's statement, but I do remember millions around the world protesting the US considering an invasion before the US went in. so, I guess I'll keep my mouth shut since I'm not willing to look stuff up. To me, it seems a non-issue now, considering the results of the invasion.

I hate that guy! The man is dangerous!

I saw him on HBO a week or so ago. I had just taken a sip of juice when he said that Governor Arnold spoke out against the gay marriages in San Francisco, but apparently was still for same-sex groping.

I almost choked on my drink I was laughing so hard!

    Mulan,

He is the dude. I watch for his new show every week on HBO, sometimes watch for my favorite parts in the replays during the week.

    Simon would love this show.

I htink Maher's comments about 9/11 have a great deal of substance to them. The guys who killed all those ppl on 9/11 didn't do it just because they are evil and hate America. It goes deeper than that. There attacks were on places that carry a tremendous amount of symbolism in the rest of the world, particularly their own. No matter how desperate and twisted their thoughts and actions were, we do ourselves a great deal of good by getting past the blood and raw emotions of this event and ask ourselves why educated men would resort to such a life.

To answer bigboi's question "why would these educated guys " do such a thing? Maybe looking at the corruption in SaudiArabia would help answer that question. From the founding of American oil companies in SA (1930s?) The Saud State has provided not mere necessities but luxuries to their people. Well those families of princes just kept growing and growing. About 2 decades ago many of the subsidies went the way of the dodo bird. Way too many fingers for rubies and diamonds that were left to go around. The absolute lack of any truly good education became apparent. So unlike the physicists of India who get great jobs around the world, those educated by the Saud didn't get the same education. So who to blame? Why the Americans and the Jews of course, I mean maybe we don't sit around drinking thick coffee and watching our horses get a workout while seated (the people) on rare antiques, but somehow we're the evil ones taking $$$ from the diamond encrusted hands of the princes and their brood.

About 2 months ago National Geographic had a terrific piece about this very question.

Instead of building refineries ad nauseum in SA, maybe Amco should have said "Hey, let us mop up that dirty oil for you nomads. Ya'know make the road to Mecca cleaner." Yeah, then this whole problem would've been avoided!

The homicide bombers did NOT all know that they would die. Only the key leaders knew the mission was not hijacking. That report was on 60 minutes and CNN.

Now, Bill Maher likes to shock people. He is witty but in the 9?11 remarks he over stepped acceptable...like when Roseanne grabbed her crotch while singing the National Anthem.

But Maher put down Religion, I thought JW's loved religion? Or, should I say, the wacky, cult that is the JW's.

I do have faith. I believe there is a god. I just don't believe he's a god who needs all the bells and whistles that religious people think he seems to need to get attention.

Perfectly said. I cannot speak for other religions, but as a child/young adult being raised as a JW, What-the-hell insecurity problem does Jehovah have? We gotta attend 5 mind number meetings a week, go door to door just several hours a week, basically make it our entire LIFE? That's what "pleases" Jehovah?
