Sure, go ahead, disfellowship overweight people. How many millions of JWs do you think will be disfellowshipped? Maybe that would be the way to finally bring the WTBTS down.

Gluttony? Define gluttony. Does a person have to be a glutton to be overweight? Can a person eat normal amounts of food and be overweight?

Can a naturally thin person be a glutton?

Where do you draw the line between eating extra calories and gluttony?

I personally have witnessed many THIN people who eat like pigs....Maybe they were just exceptionally hungry that day, or, maybe THEY were gluttons. So being "obese" doesn't necessarily make you a glutton....I personally find this subject offensive. Just say NO to Fat prejudice. If you don't know all the details about a person, which most people don't, then quit judging them.

Amen, Cathy. May those who have fat prejudice all end up on some planet together in the hereafter. Leave them to each other and themselves. This would be justice.

I think Disfellowshipping should be a disfellowshipping offense! Maverick

Soooooo true, Mav. Glad you said it. Or hey : disfellowship everybody! Every last single one.
I have been deeply deeply hurt by family over my weight and one day I told them all to leave me the hell alone. They are not me , they don't know me. and they don't look like me and I said to them just shove it cause I don't need you. I am a better person then they may think. Fat Cat

Orange lady, you are beautiful inside and out. I am so sorry anyone has hurt you over your size. Beauty does not come in a size! Gaining weight, when I got into my 30s, taught me a lot about beauty. I had a very limited idea of what beauty is. I missed beauty everywhere because of my narrow view.I am the one who lost the most. Thank goodness I don't miss all the abundant beauty now.

Let me tell you, this is how the creator deals with me: if I go around judging people and making shallow, ignorant size-ups of people, you can bet the very same thing ends up happening to me. This forces me to take a deeper look and reshape my opinions and ideas.

One good thing about being a more voluptuous woman is you get to see who the real gentlemen and ladies are. When you are slim, guys fall all over themselves to open the door for you and pay attention to you. When you are larger only the true gentlemen do this. Much to my delight, I have found that it's a myth that all men only like thin women.

Oh yeah, OrangeFatCat, being overweight is an excellent character meter. Don't you think? And you are lovely. Just look at your pic on your avatar. You radiate inner and outer beauty.

YES, unless it is a medical condition.

There was an elder in my congration as a kid, his name was Pat McCormack. He was HUGE, and he could hardly get up onto the platform for a part. Not one person ever said that it was a medical condition, therefore, he must have been a glutton.

The Bible talks about gluttony, excessive overeating, as the sin, not obesity. Strangely enough, gluttons don't have to be obese to be gluttons nor are overweight people automatically gluttons. As to the medical aspect of it, elders already think they are doctors advising people on medical treatment, blood, rehab, mental illness, etc. Elders are definitely not qualified to determine who is "fat." What would they use, "wordly" standards, since there is nothing in the Bible. If the WTS could make it a DFing offense, they would have by now. I have seen one person DF'd for greed that was really a glutton.

The Bible even says God will make his servants fat:

    Psalm 92:13-14 (NWT)

Those who are planted in the house of Jehovah, In the courtyards of our God, they will blossom forth. They will still keep on thriving during gray-headedness, Fat and fresh they will continue to be,

    Proverbs 11:25 (NWT)

The generous soul will itself be made fat, and the one freely watering [others] will himself also be freely watered.

    Proverbs 13:4 (NWT)

The lazy one is showing himself desirous, but his soul [has] nothing. However, the very soul of the diligent ones will be made fat.

    Proverbs 28:25 (NWT)

He that is arrogant in soul stirs up contention, but he that is relying upon Jehovah will be made fat.

actually, fat prejudice would have to fall somewhere behind smoking prejudice (what no drinking prejudice?) and gay marriage.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the WTS start dfing people for being overweight. They definitely do hold it against a person. My family has a predisposition to being overweight, and I have the problem too, and it's compounded by other health problems. I remember the first congregation I attended for 12 years. I could not go to a single meeting without having someone open their stupid mouth about my weight problem. Finally I started coming late and leaving early just so I wouldn't have to hear their stupidity. Then they started nagging my wife and my mother about my weight problem. It finally stopped one day when I got fed up with it and loudly told someone in the hall that their stupid mouth was MUCH bigger than my stomach, and FAR more offensive.

As I recall, both gluttony and "drunkenness" are considered in the same league in the bible, even in the good 'ol NWT. I think they are both 2 of the seven deadly sins(?). In any event, we all know how JW's pick and choose their disfellowshipping offenses, failing to take into consideration the allegorical, cultural, and historical context of the scriptures. We know far more about the reality of addictions--including alcohol AND food addictions today than they did when they set the no-no's in Hebrew/NWT times.

It IS inconsistent to label cigarette smokers as worthy of disfellowshipping, but "guttony" and obesity as not. Very, very few reasons exist for the vast majority of obesity: it's simply chalked up to eating more than you consume. And based on my exp with the JW's, a LOT of them eat to much because they've got a lot of issues, conflicts, and pressures and they aren't encouraged to have a lot of relaxation outlets.

Well, don't you think most people over 15-18 years old tip the scales over the life insurance charts? They would df millions of people if they started dfing people for being overweight.

So what is the reason non-jws overeat then? And since you are not a doctor or scientist and you likely don't follow these JWs around monitoring what they eat, how do you know "a LOT" of them eat too much? Many people who are overweight eat significantly less than do slender people.

OrangeFatCat, I'm glad what I said encouraged you. I said some pretty ignorant things about being overweight when I was thin. Boy did those things come back to bite me in the a$$ later on. It's very hard to be patient with shallow, foolish people. It's very hard to wait for life to teach them how little they know. Who'd you rather spend a week with, arrogant, stupid people or fat, jolly people? I'll take the fat, jolly people anyday.

I can recall this issue coming up in the 1973--1977 era. Several elders were contemplating the wbts declaring the overweight people as gluttons.

This was the era where I was losing respect for the borg. I recall several elders looking forward to being able to enforce the expected "new law" on people ,with some enthusiasm. Discussing between them selves, which ones they thought should be dealt with first.

This was just one more disgusting possibility in my mind and added to my growing problem with the wbts. Talk about "CONTROL FREAKS".
