Of course, she was, and so was Joanna, Martha, Mary Jesus' mother, Susanna, Philip, Stephen, were all disciples, but not one of the 12 original apostles. Another discussion is was Matthias the true replacement for Judas or was Paul?

This is becoming a popular topic again because of the DaVinci code novel. In reality most if not all of the Apostles are literary characters. Those that were real persons (if any) certainly were not like the chararizations of them in the NT stories. Very serious and reputable scholarship questions the historicity of Jesus. Therefore questions about Mary Mag. being an Apostle are really missing the issues The Gnostic Xtians held M.Mag in high esteme as a lover and confidant of Jesus leading some researchers to conclude she was an author of some of the stories that became incorporated into the Gospels. There have been proponents of this idea for hundreds of years. Unfortunately there simply is nothing to even suggest that M.Mag. is not likewise a literary character. Perhaps a character that later chauvenist Xtians felt needed to be rewritten in a lesser role than earlier versions of the Jesus stories. There are serious attempts to place M.Mag at the core of Xtianity at web sites and books The observations are good but the conclusions are left unsupported. I believe one site is entitled, "Was Christianity founded (or started?) by a woman?"
