looks like we will soon be having Will Young as priminister or maybe Gareth gates (insert whatever pop idol)

How desperate is this nation to go letting 16 yr olds vote?

Well I'm not a Brit, so I don't know what your politics are like... but do you really think that there's going to be a huge difference between 16 and 18 year olds?

At least here in the US, most young people (18-25) don't vote. I think that any teenager who votes is likely to be exceptionally serious-minded and/or politically involved, and will probably make good use of their franchise.

The voting age should be tied to the drinking age. Are they going to lower the drinking age to 16?

btw Brummie, where ya been. I was afeared ya drove off a cliff somewhere !

I hope so Euph, but 16 yr olds here are more pop romantics as far as I can see and love to vote their idols in.

Kinda reminds me of that character that Michael J. Fox played in a sitcom in the 80s, and I'll be dad-gummed if I can't remember the name of it. He played the character "Alex P. Keaton" who was born a Republican from ultra-liberal Democratic parents. He was politically active, at..oh... FOUR!

It's the liberals who want this to happen. It's a perfect foil for them: the schools are already packed with liberal teachers who are more than willing to "encourage" students in their classes "how" they should vote.

The proposal on the table doesn't give 16 years a full vote. Children ages 16 and 17 get a half vote, while children 14 and 15 only get a quarter of a vote. That's why the US Constitution would have to get amended, because only speaks of a full vote. Not only would the amendement have to pass, it would have to be ratified by 75% of the States.

That ain't gonna happen. As a whole, children of those ages simply don't have enough life experience to elect political leaders. I don't know about you, but I don't want Britanny Spears to be a US Senator. We already have enough idiots in Congress as it is.

One liberal teacher, right here...but I don't encourage one way or the other....my students are, to a person, Democratic devotees.
