I feel so helpless and guilty this is just not fair.
That would be something to say, I think.
Perhaps you can mention to the friend, carefully, that as the GB has changed its position about things in the past, there is always the possibility that they would change their position about marriage... ?
Everyone needs to vent at these times. Showing love by just being there, listening, will help them more than your words, I think.
It sure is a hard place to be... I'm so sorry to hear of this.
