I'm telling ya the conservatives are sending this country to hell in a handbasket.

Conservatives, eh? Oh, you mean the same conservatives who are opposed to unnecessary displays of governmental power such as this?

Someone will take this to the Supreme Court and hopefully, they'll get it right.

That would be the same Supreme Court that upholds every other case that further helps to "send this country to hell in a handbasket." Sounds like you have it all figured out!

There have been times when I have felt like the search warrant requirement stifled justice... but...

I don't like this development at all.

Ouch that can be a problem. I remember when I was a Jw in Montreal & Cross was taken hostage .

Trudeau brought that into law... They burst into my home & searched it...Seems I had been making "back calls" on the home next to where Cross was being held.

I evidently had been under watch for over two weeks.....Scared the daylights out of me.

But I surmized it was Armeggedon! & you know I was waiting to be stood up against the wall to be shot as other faithful JWs had been( according to the WT)

I knew that some dogs would jump out from somewhere & attack those holding the guns!! I would be saved....( Dont laugh!!! that is what we heard in the kingdom hall.

Or other faithful folks swam across rivers of crocs to get to an assembly... Hang in there !!!

In this modern world, we're losing our liberties. There are cameras everywhere watching us, and now cops can come in our homes, and look at what they couldn't see with their electronic eyes.

    That's bad.

Here in Quebec, cops also raided a church, something that they weren't aloud to do.

A little more background info on this would be nice. Will it be abused? Sure, all power is abused...it's what happens after the abuse is what's important.

This is NOT okay. I wonder if they are going to hand him over to a bunch of torturers, like they did Canadian citizen Mayer Arar? Granted, this man is not a Canadian citizen, but even so, after what happened to Arar, how can our government do this? We have a Bosnian refugee who has been taking sanctuary in one of our churches for quite some time, almost a year I believe. If this kind of tactic was employed by the police here, there would be hell to pay, I assure you. It's disappointing that no protests are/were planned east of Montreal.

Thanks for posting this, I missed it. The duplicitous fashion in which this was done reeks. GRRRR!!

How scary for you!! I remember the days of the FLQ and the War Measures Act. The JWs sure did use that to terrify us, didn't they? It gave me nightmares, I couldn't sleep. You, on the other hand, were right in the midst of it. Yikes !

what happens after the abuse is what's important

Not to the people who are wrongly imprisoned, and / or tortured. The abuse is quite important to them, imo. And if you're poor, then good luck with the courts! It is generally the poor who receive abuses at the hands of 'rogue' or ill-intentioned police.

Yes talesin> I was so scared when they two of them marched into my house without saying anything

My Melanie ( since died) was not well that day & home from school in bed- she went white when the marched into her bedroom-

As they were coming up my stairs ( I lived in a duplex) I said "Is it my husband? is it my son? "( They had just left for work!! so I thought one had been killed)But they wouldnt reply...

One ran out the back door- ( to see if anyone was there) the other searched under beds -cupboards etc: I was studying my Watch Tower- !!!! LOL

Then they showed me pictures of the FLQ gang( I couldnt remember in the above post what they were called ) thanks Talesin for reminding me....) Asked if I knew any of them....

    WHOA, they came right into your house? My god, woman, you have had quite a life! You are the epitomy of 'STRONG'. {{{mouthy}}}

A question for any Quebecers? First we had Duplessis, the FLQ, and now this incident with the refugee. Do you think that the stranglehold the Catholic Church had for so long plays any part in the culture of French Canada in this regard? Or is it more about the French-English conflicts? Why do these type of incidents happen in Quebec? (NOT slamming PQ, just really curious to get YOUR views and comments.)

I doubt if this ruling will stand for long. The 5th Circuit is notorious for being reversed by the Supreme Court. Yeru is correct. Of course the power will be abused. The New Orleans police department used to have one of the worst reputations in the nation. Don't know what their current situation is. I was born and raised in LA and was glad to leave it in my rear view mirror. The corruption in that state was awful. We are entertaining their former Govenor in our federal prision here in Fort Worth.
