Has anyone here tried the Atkins Diet or something like it? I was looking at some info that a co-worker sent me about being overweight. I desperately need to lose A LOT of weight, but I'm starving all the time and have packed on the 30 lbs. I took off last year PLUS another 10 pounds. In total, I need to lose about 110 lbs. I feel like the fattest pig in the world and I can't stand it any more. I do my exercising 3-4 times a week, but I can't seem to control my hunger. My doctor refuses to prescribe Meridia to help me, as she thinks it's "dangerous". Uh, I think it's a hell of alot more dangerous for me to be so frigging overweight.

Anyway, I've never been one to give any thought to the "high protein, low carb" theory, but after I read the article my co-worker sent me, it made me re-think it. Apparently if you're really overweight, chances are there's way too much insulin in your blood. As such, it won't release the fat in your body even when you're dieting and exercising. Plus, it makes you ravonously hungry and craving more foods, which you will cave into sooner or later, which releases more glucose, which increases your insulin and it just becomes a vicious cycle till you're as big as Jabba the Hut.

I'm willing to try this, but this is the last stop before I seriously consider weight loss surgery........I don't want to get surgery, but I'm terrified that I could get cancer (again), or some other disease like diabeties if I can't get the weight off.

Any comments on this would be greatly appreciated.

U may be diabetic. Have a glucose tolerance test. People who are pre diabetic are often insulin resistant. I got impared kideny function from the atkins and south beach diet. One thing u can safely do is elimate the bread /wheat group. That is a lot of stuff. u may find if u elimate bread and sugar, u will drop punds and feel much better and not be as restrictive as the atkins and south beach.

Also, u may need to find a new doc, one that understnds that obesity is dangerous to your health. Mine has attacked this problem on all fronts. Diet, exercise, and lipid lowering drugs. Plus that glucose tolerance test. find a doc who will prescribe diet pills. phenertime is safe. Better than diabetes and a heart attack.

    Good luck to u

to add, i dis consider weight loss surgery at one time, but it is very dangerous. The new lap band is not so bad, but they do tell u up front-u can gain the weight back. there is a web site, obesityhelp.com that is great. i love the site. They give doc recomends, and u get to talk with people who have had it done and see what it is Really like. The new lap band would be perfect, but many insurance companies do not cover it. getting approved for the surgery is frightful most of the time.

Finding a new doctor is out of the question. I live in Ontario, Canada where there's a better chance of winning the lottery than finding a doctor----major shortage here and we had to pull teeth to get the one I've got.

find a doc who will prescribe diet pills. phenertime is safe.

What is phenertime? I've never heard of it.......I just tried doing a search on the internet but nothing came up. Is this the correct spelling?

I got impared kidney function from the atkins and south beach diet. One thing u can safely do is elimate the bread /wheat group. That is a lot of stuff. u may find if u elimate bread and sugar, u will drop punds and feel much better

I've heard of bad side effects like this..........that's what scares me about the diet. I'd prefer to try and lose weight with fresh fruits, veggies and wholes grains, but I find I'm just so damn hungry........that's why I need something to suppress my appetite. I know that once I get used to eating that way, it might be easier to stick to it eventually without prescription medication. I'm sure if I just pray more and go out in Service more, the pounds will just fall off me.

Mary I am so glad u are back. I missed your witty posts.

    Phentermine, brand names, adipex-p Ionamin.

U can order phentermine off the net. From an online pharmacy without a script. it is not the same as the old phen-phen diet pills a few years ago. They combined a drug called pondimin (probably not spelled correctly) with phentermine. It was dangerous and the FDA took it off the market. But phentermine by itself it really a pretty good diet pill. Can u get a consult with a weight control doctor? How much overweight do u need to be before they would consider it?

Yes i actually had my kidney function tests come back abnormal and had to stop the high protein diet. But really, since then i have elimnated wheat, and potatoes, rice and sugar. It is working pretty good. The south beach, if u use less protein is probably pretty good. They actually state that in the book, for people with impared kidney function.

The diet u suggested is good, but one thing i note about myself. Having a bit of protein,/ fat, really is filling and stops my hunger. All fruits and vegs just make me hungry..(u know like chinese food, u are hungry 2 hours after u eat it).

    Mary,

one other thing. My hairdresser went on the Atkins and lost abut 80# and she ended up with a gall bladder attack and having it removed and a kidney stone. doc said all the results of the diet.. Actually, the weight loss surgeons will tell u that very rapid weight loss can cause liver problems. seems that the key is steady fairly slow weight loss.

Mary, I have no right giving medical advice, but here is what I know works for me.

The Atkins diet promises fast weight loss, but it is just not a healthy lifestyle. If you are eating a lot of refined sugars (high fructose corn syrup, sugar, etc.) that is found in almost every processed food, you must stop. These are not good for anybody. The human body's best source of fuel is indeed carbohydrate, but it must be from a natural source. Please, if you haven't already, start replacing processed junk foods with natural, whole grain products. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Avoid high-fat protein sources, replacing them with modest amounts of lean meat like trimmed poultry and fish.

Again, I don't know your exact health status, but assuming you are not diabetic or anything, this is a good diet.

All carbohydrates are not equal. Refined sugars are terrible. They contain no nutrients or protein, and they spike your blood sugar, which only leads to a crash leaving you hungrier than before. High-quality complex carbs are loaded with B-vitamins, sufficient proteins, and dozens of other chemicals our bodies need. They enter your blood slower and last longer, leaving you more satisfied in the long run without a crash.

Hope this helps you get well.

I've been following yr thread. This is just my opinion, take it or leave it.

You can eat lots of protein if you start cooking with beans, lentils and tofu. *fat free protein* No 'white' foods, no processed foods (all home made, the chemicals do a number on your system), and limit dairy products. Olive oil is good for you. My other fat is canola, also a so-called 'good' fat. I also echo what new light and wednesday say, except for the diet pills.

Jane Brody's Guide to Good Nutrition really helped me understand food better. It's not a new book (80s), but explains a lot about how foods work in your body. It helped me feel more confident about my choices. I got healthier, lost 70 pounds, and I am a type 2 diabetic so diet is really important to my long-term prognosis.

    For what it's worth.

If you want encouragement or recipes anytime, if I can help, just pm me.

Edit: Like Weds says, Atkins BAD DIET, lots of horror stories re: the gallblader and just think about it; all that protein, imagine how hard your poor liver has to work to process it!!! No offense to the Atkins dieters reading this, but please, do your own *google* search.

and BTW, chocolate = good (but only the expensive stuff, has no hydrogenated fat )

    Hi Everyone;

Thanks so much for your input. I have always felt that there was indeed something wrong with the Atkins diet, as I have a hard time believing that eating steak and eggs is better for you than fruits and vegetables.

Wednesday, I'll look into the phentermine..........I'm not sure if I can get it here in Canada, but I'll ask my doctor about it when I see her next week. If this doesn't work, I'm going over to Africa for a year. The natives will take one look at me and go "Dinner has arrived!!" LOL!!

Actually, there seems to be something very promising in terms of a potential diet pill under way. It won't be on the market for a few more years though. It's called Hoodia and it grows in South Africa. The natives there have used it for thousands of years to ward off starvation and thirst as it sends a message to your brain that you're not hungry. The pharmaceutical company that makes Viagra tried ripping off the natives for millions of dollars claiming they thought the natives had "died out". However, there seems to be a molecule in this stuff called P-57 that makes you not want to eat. I guess it's been on CNN, the BBS and other stations. Before you make a decision, I would weigh all of your options. Maybe research the Atkins diet or other low-carb diets a little bit more before jumping to the conclusion that it is unhealthy. Here is a website that my husband and I found very interesting. You can find out all you need to know on the message board and talk to people who have tried it.

    www.atkinsfriends.com

My husband and I had good results with it when we tried it. There are several myths. One is that you lose the weight rapidly which can cause health problems. You only lose the weight very rapidly during induction. After that weight loss averages 1 - 2 lbs. per week ( a healthy weight loss rate).

Another myth is that it is a "steak & eggs" diet. It isn't. You can have plenty of veggies and fruit is limited as long as they are the lower sugar fruits (ones that don't cause serious jumps in your insulin levels).

I would love to chat with you more about it if you are still interested. Feel free to PM me.

Of course, you have to temper that diet with lots of exercize. The calories from whatever diet foods you eat will go nowhere unless you exercize.
