    Hello Mary

The Atkins diet. Last summer received much bad press in the media in the UK, like anything faddish, many people jumped on it, cos it was the coolest thing to do then, but many many dietrician experts disagree with the diet. You may like to do a web search to do some research first.

    Kindest regards

Hi Mary, what part of Ontario are you in. I am in Ontario too and I have been using Weight Watchers, doing it all on line. You can go to their canadian website log on, weigh yourself, count points on line, chat in message boards and the best part is no weighing yourself in front of others.

    PM me if you like,

    Diana

I did Atkins last year and lost about 30 lbs pretty quick- in about 3 months. Thing is it all goes back on if you go back to eating normally and haven't the time to exercise (especially if you stop smoking too!!!) so now I'm back to the weight I was and am just trying to cut out bread, pasta and all white flower.

I talked it over with my doc and as I am scraping at the bottom end of being obese according to my BMI (which is obviously bullshit, I'm just short for my weight!), he told me I would definitely get adult onset diabetes if I didn't pull my finger out and get some exercise.

If you can get a bit more exercise it helps alot, I found that the best diet for maintainable weight loss was slimming world. Not sure if you have it over there but it's all down to food combining - not mixing proteins and starches in the same meal. The bonus is that you can eat as much as you like of the right foods on each specific day so never be hungry.

Mary, I feel for you, when I turned 40 I gained tons of weight, and thought I was eating healthy because I ate low fat, lots of bagels, bananas, etc. Well I was starving all the time. I finally read a book called the Glucose Revolution that explained the glycemic index. I have diabetes in my family and am very sensitive to high carb, sugary foods. It changed my life. I lost weight and was not hungry at all. I now eat mostly seafood, chicken, some lean steak, tons of veggies, and complex carbs.

Also, I do lots of weight lifting, it builds muscle which helps keep the pounds off. If I do too much cardio and exercise with my heart rate too high, I just burn all the glucose in my body and crave carbs for the rest of the day...took me a long time to learn these tips but it has really helped.

My understanding is that if you have weak kidneys, a high protien diet may injur them. I am on atkins today. I donated a kidney last July. My last check up with the surgeon (Dr. Vick, San Antonio) I told him I did Atkins off and on. He said that was fine, go back to your normal eating habits, but don't do the high protien for months at a time. I wouldn't live it, though I have cut out all the white stuff perm (poatoes, bread, tortia...). When I hit close to my desired weight, I usually start eating all the veggies I want.

One thing about atkins... you're never hungry.

ROFLMAO!!! Yep, that's my problem.......I'm too short. If I were only 9 feet tall, I wouldn't have a weight problem!!

If you can get a bit more exercise it helps alot, I found that the best diet for maintainable weight loss was slimming world.

Actually, that's the thing: I DO exercise. Example: last week I did half an hour on my exercise bike 6 days out of 7. I was going to Curves for Women but find it's harder and harder to move my larger-than-life-ass up there.

I do lots of weight lifting, it builds muscle which helps keep the pounds off. If I do too much cardio and exercise with my heart rate too high, I just burn all the glucose in my body and crave carbs for the rest of the day

Hmmm..........that's interesting. Curves for Women is a combination of the two and in the past I've found it works well. Last year I lost 13.5 inches off my body in one month, so it does work. Anyhoo, I'm going to my doctors next week to talk to her and see if she is willing to help me out on this.
