This is to expound on what fe203girl said in an earlier topic. http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/12/69666/1094454/post.ashx#1094454

It always bothered me as JW, just how little social and global responsibility we felt responsible for.

With regards to pollution, and environmetnal concerns, the prevailing attitude was "jehovah will fix that in the new system". With regards to social injustice, and the plight of the poor, the same attitiude.

Now that you may no longer be relying on God to fix up all of the screw-ups, Do you find yourself trying to be a better resident of planet earth?

I'm no different - I wanted to help then and I still do. It annoyed the hell out of me when I mentioned (as a child) doing something for Comic Relief (maybe I brought a form to get sponsors after the bookstudy) and I was told that "all those problems are caused by governments (even droughts and floods?!) - they could help if they wanted to... you should not be political" - I was about 8! Give me 50p for my sponsored swim!

You get funny looks if you ask whether WT stuff is printed on recycled paper or from sustained forest schemes, like no-one would ever think of doing something so worldly!

I always recycled, I always gave to charity, JW or not.

I was a quiet recycler, after being hassled with all the crap about Jehovah fixing it in the new system, so we needn't bother. And a furtive recycler is not a thorough recycler; I was very hit-or-miss.

No charity, are you kidding? For one, I was too broke, and for another, Jehovah wouldn't like me giving my dough to anyone but Bethel, right?

Now, I try to make up for lost time on both counts, all the while shaking my head at what a jackass I was before.

We spent a SATURDAY morning once with our young children - OMG - painting pictures of ducks and whales on the city's curbs at the storm drain areas - with the words, "We live downstream, don't pollute!" .....and the whole time looking over our shoulders to see if one's out in service would see us and stone us to death or something!

The only time I can recall recycling anything was when I was very young. My dad brought a bunch of scrap aluminum and crushed aluminum cans to a place where he was able to exchange it for cash.

I distinctly recall watching one of those "Save the Children" type programs where they were asking for donations to help starving people in Ethiopia. After watching in horror for awhile I ran to my parents and asked them if we could send some money to help. They promptly said that sending them food or money was only a temporary solution and that it would be better for us to send money to the WTS so that we could "save people in the long run" by having them become Jehover Witnesses.

I also recall being rebuked for trying to put some change in the "charity jar" at a checkout. I say "try" because my mom grabbed my hand and pulled it away from the jar before I could drop the coins. (You should have seen he face on the checkout clerk)

I'm proud to say that I am now a sponsor of a little boy in the Philippines. Giving to charity is a freedom that I enjoy very much.

Recycled, yes. But we didn't set it out at the curb in a blue plastic bin to be hauled away for nothing. Nosirree! Not when you can save up a few hundred pounds of beer cans in your back yard & then take them to someone who will pay 20 cents a pound. *LOL*

Give to charity? Oh, goodness, no! If their organization is worthwhile, then Jehovah will see to their needs.

    Now, I do both.
