I've gotten more into recyling recently. I noticed my garage was filling up with styrofoam from the several wineries that send me wine monthly. I couldn't find a way to recycle it, so I called up the Napa wineries and asked why they don't use pulp products like our local Washington wineries do. Several of them called me back and shared my concerns about what to do with the styrofoam. Maybe it was a PR thing, but I hope I made them reconsider their choices.

I give to several charties, the humane society, AIDS foundation, and suicide prevention are my major ones.

I do feel guilty I did nothing about these things when I was a JW...

As a JW I recycled a little, glass bottles mainly and gave a little to a number of charities (a token offering).

Since not being one I recyle 100% of material able to be recycled. It does help that the city provides a recycling service and collects mixed plastic/glass/steel/aluminum and mixed paper/light card material. I give a lot more to charity and set a side money for a number of causes. However, I am a lot better off financially now compared to when I was a JW. (Must be Satan's influence, eh?). My employer is big in to promoting the United Way and Mrs Thirdson is a grant writer for a non-profit org so I have been influenced as well.

Nope -- my dad didn't believe in that. And the only charity we gave to was other JW's.

Now the Salvation Army gets everything and that is because they make it easy and I love the slips for tax write-offs.

And we have about one bag of garbage a week (for four people) -- the rest is recycling.

    Interesting replies everbody.

Glitter: You get funny looks if you ask whether WT stuff is printed on recycled paper or from sustained forest schemes, like no-one would ever think of doing something so worldly!

I've mentioned that here on a few occasions. Such a waste of so many trees with all the publications being printed by WTBTS, and most of them ending up in landfill. I do not consider WTBTS to be a good corporate citizen.

Blondie and Ascot. Good for you. I wish I had your foresight.

insomniac: "Now, I try to make up for lost time on both counts, all the while shaking my head at what a jackass I was before"

I hear you. We were hit and miss ourselves, but consider ourselves very serious recyclers now. Even the toilet tissue inserts !

4JWY: "We spent a SATURDAY morning once with our young children - OMG - painting pictures of ducks and whales on the city's curbs at the storm drain areas - with the words, "We live downstream, don't pollute!"

LOL A much better reason to get up on a Saturday morning, and fun too. Feels great to do something worthwhile dosen't it?

Elsewhere: "I'm proud to say that I am now a sponsor of a little boy in the Philippines"

Raising 3 kids ourselves, I wish I had thought of sponsoring children instead. Would have been cheaper, and a whole lot less hassles

Dan-O: "Nosirree! Not when you can save up a few hundred pounds of beer cans in your back yard & then take them to someone who will pay 20 cents a pound"

Here in Ontario, We have to pay a 10 cent deposit, on beer bottles, and 20 cent on cans. You will rearely find a beer bottle can, or bottle in any blue bins here !

Pork Chop. Good to see you're investing your time and energy in worthwhile causes.

Rabbit. Sad, to think how we were brainwashed to view other charities. Had to laugh at Elsewhere's comment about his mom, ripping his hand away form the charity jar.

Sabine: "Several of them called me back and shared my concerns about what to do with the styrofoam"

So what do you do with the styrofoam??

Thirdson: "My employer is big in to promoting the United Way and Mrs Thirdson is a grant writer for a non-profit org so I have been influenced as well"

My employer as well. We have a bit of a competition every year, to meet a new goal every year, and the company reaps dividends, when the United Way hands our their annual awards of recognition.

Purza: "Now the Salvation Army gets everything and that is because they make it easy and I love the slips for tax write-offs. And we have about one bag of garbage a week (for four people) -- the rest is recycling.

I remember, after CJ and made the decision not to go back, how free I felt to drop money into the Salvation Army kettle drive, and not care less, who may have seen me. And one bag of garbage a week. Good for you !

If I lived in the city, I would recycle, but I don't so I don't have that option. However, I am very careful about what goes onto my land, so that no pollution results. I *do* give to charities: children's advocacy groups, reforestation project funds, and animal organizations.
