Hockey Night at the Kingdom Hall

When I was little, I can remember certain Brothers? who would hide small transistor radios in their suit jackets and listen to NHL Playoff games via a small earphone instead of paying attention at the meetings. These weren't teenagers or young guys... some were elders and/or ministerial servants... yet none of them ever seemed to get counselled for this kind of disrespectful behaviour.

Did anyone else ever do things like this, when significant sporting events fell on Meeting Nights??

I know of brothers who would go Tuesday night to another congregation when a game was on Thursday night, and that was the school overseer.

I know of elders who adjusted their meeting times to go to a game in person.

It just depends on who you are and sometimes how much you donate.

When we had our circuit assembly during football season we would get a friend to go out to the parking lot and listen to the radio for score updates. Then he would come back in and pass the news. Sure eased the boredom.

We saw that too, Cathy. The CO brought it up during his final talk at the assembly. Next assembly, they were going out to their trucks to get the score. There was a guy who got no respect.

    Hi Scully

I remember back in 1966, England were in the (Soccer) World Cup, and their crucial semi-final against Portugal was a midweek fixture. It clashed with the bookstudy.

The bookstudy was held in the home of this couple - the wife was in and baptised, the husband just studying (he went on to be an elder, in time). Clearly, missing this important match was a huge test of his fledgling faith.

He needn't have worried really. They lived in a terraced house with the proverbial paper-thin walls. When England scored we heard the neighbours cheering from both sides.

As soon as the closing prayer was over the TV came on, not even a second's delay. It really was: "...InJesusnameAmen"*click!*

So we got to see most of the second half. England won, and went on to win the Final, too. The only time they ever did.

    Duncan.

Years ago there was a Canada - Sweden hockey game on a Sunday afternoon. Me and a Ministerial Servant? volunteered for parking lot security, where we sat in my car and listened to the game on the radio. Every so often we went back into the hall to report the score to an eagerly waiting attendent who would then pass the info on to others.

    Unfortunately Canada lost that game.

BTW Scully, we're gonna kick some Senator ass tonight!!!!!

In the late fall of 1983 the Seattle Seahawks got into the playoffs for the first time ever. In January '84 they were in the AFC title game with the Okland Raiders during the Sunday afternoon of our circuit assembly. There was a nearly continous run of brothers out to the parking lot to retrieve something they left in their cars. We ended up losing the game.

You go right ahead, Brother iiz2cool!! The Sens choke in the playoffs the way my grandpa used to choke on his dentures!! Either way, my colleagues and I will have the game on at work tonight.
