Emotions are known to exist in lots of mammals, including our closest ancestors the Chimpanzees. Anyone who has done any research on their behavior knows that they display emotions very similar to humans. Other animals, such as elephants, are also known to display striking emotional behavior. I believe Darwin actually wrote a book about animal behavior and emotions, exhaustively documenting the emotional behaviors of many animals. Of course there has been much more insight uncovered on this topic since then.
The obvious conclusion is that emotional behavior does have some sort of survival advantage since it is seen in many animal species - especially social animals. If you really think about it, the survival advantages are quite obvious and many of them have been listed on this thread.
