Maybe your right Yeru...I had thought about PMing you before I went to the movie to see what you thought of it...

In the end for me it was a movie, the bible is book and Jesus was a man.

One question, if beating a perfect man violently and savagely to the point of near death and then hanging him on a cross in such a painful manner was required for mankinds salvation. What does that say about the one whom provides this salvation?

If Jesus died in his sleep, killed by the traitor Judas would that have sufficed or would that have not been painful and grusom enough?

Shotgun:I suspect that the [external evidence / narrative] was symbolic of the inner turmoil.

    As above, so below...

You should maybe count the strokes - just a suggestion.....With the amount of attention to detail shown, I suspect Gibson wouldn't have missed this point, if it's a valid one.

I don't think the bible specifically mentions how many strokes he received, but from the research I've done, under Roman law, 40 strokes was the norm. If this is so, it would not take 30 minutes to administer 40 strokes.

(My understanding was that the 39 strokes was a Jewish thing, not Roman, but I'll stand corrected)

It was definitely a 'Roman thing'. Although the Pharisees had already condemned him, they didn't have the legal Right to put him to death which is why Jesus was brought before Pilate. He died under Roman law, not the Jewish law.

Was the flogging scene really 30 mins? It didn't seem that long.
The "carrying the cross" scene was the longest bit, to my memory.

    Regarding flogging:
    Deut.25:3; 2Cor.11:24

    Shotgun,

God could have chosen ANY METHOD in which to wrought our salvation...say...having Jesus walk with a pebble in his sandle for a mile. The price he [Jesus] paid correlates to how important we are to God.

I have a serious question about the film. When Jesus was badly beaten, he sees "the devil" or whoever its supposed to be walking in the crowd. (fine.) then the devil is carrying some sort of devilish baby! Where the HECK did that come from?

According to a noted Pastor from Southern California (he was being interviewed on the radio) that was at a screening with Mel Gibson, andMr. Gibson fielded questions from the audience this same question was asked. Mr. Gibson stated that he wanted to show how in this time of need Satan would be comforted with his "family" wheras Jesus could not.

Nope. Not because I don't appreciate what Jesus did for me, but I can't handle all the blood/torture that apparently goes on. I can't even handle watching someone get a needle, so I don't think I could stomach watching this movie.
