What will it mean when man finally creates a machine or program that can think and is aware of itself...? Do you think that day will ever come? Would it alter your faith at all?

I find it hard to believe that day will ever come, but 8 years ago I insisted to my husband that no one would ever be willing to buy things over the Internet. So I am not exactly a trend spotter.

excellent question to which i think noone knows the answer. too little is known about what awareness is and how it is generated.

I think it's a long long long way off. There hasn't been much progress towards real AI in the past 30 years and computers still cannot pass the turing test.
I don't believe they will ever be more than calculating machines ... yes, being able to do more calculations can make them appear intelligent but they dont have an intelligence.
And at the end of the day, programmers have to write the software !

simon,
strictly speaking we are also not a lot more than calculating machines. even if our processors work quite differently. i think at this point no one can make an estimate whether true AI will be created within the next hundred years or not because too little is known what biological intelligence really is.

Simon, I think this is the test that says that you ought to regard a machine as if it's alive if you cannot distingush its answers to your questions from those a real human being might give.
In which case "Artificial Intelligence" is entirely the wrong way to go.
They should be spending their money developing "Artificial Stupidity"
Duncan.
