What will it mean when man finally creates a machine or program that can think and is aware of itself...? Do you think that day will ever come? Would it alter your faith at all?

I think it's pretty damn scarey............why the hell would man even WANT to create a machine that can think on it's own? Not too smart if you ask me. I always remember the line from Jurassic Park that Jeff Goldblum's character said when discussing the creating of the dinasaurs "...your scientists were so pre-occupied with whether they could, that they didn't stop to think if they should." I think scientists should re-watch Frankenstein (the original), Jurassic Park and T2 (and, time permitting, Young Frankenstein) to see what could go wrong when men try once too often to play God.

For those of you who are actually interested in artificial intelligence software, here's a couple that I've personally tried.

This one called "Eliza", I had in a book containing BASIC programs. I typed it into my Commodore 64, and had lots of fun with it:

This one, called "Chat with Lisa" was actually supposed to simulate a Sysop on a BBS. I ran this on my BBS, and, in my opinion, is better than Eliza, simply because you could modify the responses, and log any chats the users had with the program.

Artificial Intelligence doesn't mean sentient life. It is generally regarded as intelligence that would be created initially by man [woman]. Once a machine was advanced enough it would start improving on it's own design [name the movie anyone?? lol].

The point when a machine starts to show intelligence is when it can learn from experience and modify it's behaviour based on the experience. Some early successes have been observed with spider like robots that have a limited "brain" but their program allows them to learn from their motions about the world around them and learning as they bump into things. The interesting thing is that the program was designed for them to not bump into things and to learn and adapt. Once they have discovered that there is an obstruction it is stored as a sort of living memory so to speak and they recall this and avoid it without the obstruction having been pre-programmed into them. This is an early development [and promising to the scientists] into AI although we won't be seeing a positronic brain for quite a few decades yet. When you start seeing AI built into cars, buildings, public transport it will be more in the vein of safety features -- but don't all Sci-Fi movies start like that??? lol

Actual self awareness is a totally different subject. When a machine can create, one might think that it has reached a level of sentience. Forget Turing and his "child machine" theory I don't think we will ever see that in any lifetime.

I had always thought that Artifical Intelligence was evident when reading the Watchtower and Awake Magazines. They have artifical love, artifical caring, artifical college education (theo school), and not least of all artifical history. Artifically speaking of course. Buff
