Worried about work :S

To give everyone a brief history...

I started a 4 to 6 month contract to hire position in early Feb. the hope is that I will eventually become a permanent employee. A few weeks ago I had a little chat with my supervisor asking him how things were looking for me to become a perm employee... he responded that there was currently a hireing freeze that was just put into place and I needed wait. He added an ominous comment that I could look for perm work elsewhere if I wanted... but added that I was doing a great job.

Today I came into work to find two new *perm* employees setting up in their work areas These two people just came straight in as perm... they did not have to go through the contract to hire process like me. I know they are perm because they have name tags on their cubes, whereas mine says "Hoteling Workstation" on it. Hell... they still have not given me a security name badge yet. For me to get in the office I have to use a borrowed one from an ex-employee.

Also, these two new people are doing .Net work and I'm still stuck doing classic ASP work (Classic ASP is usually given to the person who is lowest on the totem pole.) A few weeks ago I asked my supervisor if he could send some .Net work to me and he said he would... but still has not... yet he is assigning these two new people to do nothing but .Net work.

Am I just being paranoid, or is something up?

Do you have access to your company's job postings? If so, you should watch them closely and apply for all opportunities you qualify for. You must be considered equally with any external applicants (most times internal applicants do have priority). There are usually specific rules in a corporate environment, how big is the company you work for?

good luck, it sounds like you are in a bit of a pickle.

    Elsewhere,

Back in 1988 I left my private engineering company and made a deal to run production operations at a packaging company in San Bernadino, Ca.. The first question I asked my employees was "How can I help you do your job?" The answer was 80% "They are hiring people with no experience and paying them more money than me and I have to train them." I instructed the people I was over, as long as I was over this department this would never happen as long as I was here. Guess what, the Vice-President of the company hired an inexperienced pimple faced kid for a buck more on the hour than the people I was over. It happened on a Friday, I was back at my home in North Carolina on Monday. I resigned. Many supervisors continue on and support Bull-Hockey policies that are implimented by Cluster-**ck managers and owners. You gotta cut through it if you can. I for one could not.

That doesn't sound good. It's always better to be working on the new stuff wherever you are.

That happened to me once, not in an IT company but same thing exactly. I was temping and when they got money to make the position permanent they brought someone else in, although they'd said I was doing a good job for months. I thought afterwards, of course they said I was doing a good job, they didn't want to lose me till they'd found someone else. I don't know if I was really lousy but the best they could do for the time being, or if someone just didn't like me, or what. It might just be some numbnuts policy or the new guys might be friends of someone in the HR department, you may never know. But I'd start looking around for other work if I were you, because no matter what happens, it's always better to be pro-active in these situations, if only for your own self-respect.

I don't know what the work situ is in your part of the world Elsewhere, but it seems as though your supervisors are not being honest with you.

While I was doing my teacher training, I had to work part time to make ends meet so I got a temp position in a big telemarketing company (crap job - almost as bad as being a JW!). Now of course, I had no wish to be a permanant employee there, but the cold reality was that you cot paid an extra 2 quid an hour if you were permanent. Therefore, after 6 months, I applied to have my position made pemanent.

They fed me the same bulshit as that which you have been fed, ie; there's an embargo on recruiting permanent staff.

But guess what happenned 4 days later? No less than 6 new permanent bums on seats arrived!

Sounds like time to get out matey!

Doesn't sound good to me Elsewhere.

Rejection hurts, regardless of whether it was intentional by them or not, and I am sorry that you are experiencing it. Sometimes there are not good answers for why companies make the moves they make. Although it is difficult not to do, try not to beat yourself up for the rejection, it can make you crazy and will leave you second guessing yourself.
