Back in the 70's, my mother was also df'd for smoking when they changed the policy and gave everyone who smoked six months to quit. It really effed her up, too.
When I was df'd 14 years ago, it was for smoking. My mother had just been reinstated one night when she was killed by a drunk driver 5 blocks away from the kingdom hall. My JW relatives and wife made such a mess of things after her death that I got fed up one night and reached for a smoke out of one of my brother's packs. Been smoking eversince.
The smoking was symptomatic of something else in my case, and the issues would never have been properly or honestly addressed by anyone in the organization, so when the elders opened to door to avoid df-ing by asking me, "do you intend to quit anytime soon", I just matter of factly said "no". I gave them no choice. I wanted to be df'd. The reasons for that would be better discussed in another thread tho.
In the congregation I grew up in, the PO was so fat that he had all the challenges associated with not being able to fit anywhere. He did not have a thyroid problem or any other health problems. He just over-ate. Why was this man not df'd for an obviouis lack of self-control? It is typical.

How about that!!!! Not until a study in 1992 was it determined that the nicotine was the active theraputic agent. The patch will do the Job too.
