Good point, talesin. Nothing is always black or white.

So what would have happened before this law... would a 12-year-old and a 14-year-old have been sent to jail for having sex? I don't think so!

So I really don't see how this law changes anything.

There was a case recently in GA, where a just-turned-18 high-school boy was sent to prison for 10 YEARS for sexual interference, because he had consensual sex with a classmate who was about to turn 16. Luckily, the mighty OPRAH took on his cause, and the decision was reversed on appeal about 2 weeks ago. I was thinking specifically of that case when I brought up the point.

I think the 2-year rule means that teenagers, of similar age, will not be unfairly prosecuted. OTOH, the law still protects children from adult sexual predators.

So is this New Zealand thing behind the sell of the Furman street buildings???? A relocation is in the works?

    Talesin, good point.

The tone of the article just frustrates me... with hysterical statements like this:

Parents and police would be powerless to act if the relationship was not condoned.

Legally, parents can pretty much stop their kids from doing anything until the kids are 18. This law is not going to change parental authority one whit.

Yeah, the press, they always stir the pot, don't they? Sensationalize every issue.

And yes, parents still have the ultimate responsibility and legal control here till 18 as well. I mean, I remember when I was newly out of the bOrg, I waited till in my 20s but most of my friends had been sexually active by age 15 or 16 at the latest. That was in the late 70s. It's nothing new, but I do think that laws that protect kids from adults, whilst acknowledging that teens are doing it, are the wave of the future. And not a bad thing -- at least they are more realistic.

    It's a knotty issue, that's for sure.
