Good question Sassy, although I left at a young age, I was very zealous as well.

Yes, at the time it caused quite a stir.

Even now, after so many years, some find it hard to accept that I am 'gone'. There are a couple I have run into recently, who have told me so. Imagine that, after 20-some years!

It makes me sad more than anything, to see these lovely people so deceived, their lives wasted ...

It's taken me till now to heal, from JW as well as other stuff. I think you're doing really well! Remember, we have lots of good years ahead of us, sweetie!

Last night at a restaurant happy hour, we ran into a couple from our last cong. The JW rumour mill had led them to believe that we were attending a different congregation these days, since they haven't seen us for two years now. They asked where we go, and we said, " We DON'T GO anymore". They were stunned speechless and made a very quick exit with a "we miss you". (They live one block away from us, but have never missed us enough to come over)

Also, last night - folks at a nearby table invited us to join them and the conversation that ensued was like an X-Jdub demonstration or something. - the one girl's brother is a professor at a university in Kansas and he studies - cults! Go figure - we had a lot to share with them and they were amazed to hear the life of a JW and the exit process too.

The excuses they came up with varied from mental breakdown to demonic possession (the latter they still believe).
They couldn't comprehend such an active, loyal Elder leaving so abruptly.

Good question.........when I left, and made it clear I wouldn't be coming back, my whole jw family said that " I didnt leave, Jehoooovah removed from the cong" hehehe dont you just love that WT mentality, hehehe

I'm sure you shocked the pants off them!! DA'ing in a public talk is top! I told my JW friend you did that and she said she wishes she was there.

I was shocked when elders left - it was so hard to take. Also when ppl got DF'd I always wondered how they could possibly be so wicked!

People were definately shocked when I left. They held me on a bit of a pedestal (not kidding...) and they used to clap when I did talks even when it wasn't my first talk

I think I represented something to some of them in their minds, they would tell me how I inspired them and they were proud of me.... still not sure how they saw me as different? I think its because I brought my sister and brother in (like an idiot).

Anyway, an elder now says that I was "used" by Jehovah to bring them in and that my heart was never pure enough.

That's their attempt to take the sting out of the situation, and shoot it off at you.
Bullcr*p, I say!!! They wouldn't know "pure" if it transformed itself into a language and spoke to them...

I think the only people not shocked about my sudden exit were ex wife and the firing squad!!

My Mom supported me for a while because, in her view, I "hadn't done anything that would necessitate DF'ing". That changed when I started seeing a young lady....

One life long *friend* did comment that 'you're not the man I thought you were. You never back down from anything', only to leave less than a year later, after running off with an elders 16 yr old daughter!!
