A Somewhat Surprising Letter

Yes, under the fair usage law, you are allowed to use up to 20% as long as it's not for profit and it's for educational purposes only. We go over this damn copyright law all the time in the crochet forums, as people get po'd when you pass patterns back and forth.

Yes, I'm well aware of fair use restrictions. The expression itself is only U.S. law, but such a provision exists elsewhere, also here.

I am well aware that "fair use" is dubious at best when I posted a whole chapter. Which was precisely why I obtained permission from Commentary Press before I published it.

If the "Badame" moron is the kind of person CP wants to work for them, well...

Re: my home address. Not hard to find for anyone, especially in Norway, since I -- unlike many others -- are not afraid to use my real name. I just found it interesting that they had my correct address.

    Kent: right on!

    Hi, Jan:
Fortunately I'm able to access your post (unlike some including my on this board?).

From what I hear, there have been numerous copyright infringements on Franz's books and also Carl Olof's, and this has been on-going for some time. Badame, on behalf of Commentary Press, has been contacting various sites objecting to these infringements. I took the liberty of asking Ray about your post. He does not recall giving permission for publishing the chapter in question, and he does not have a copy of the letter. Since he cannot find a copy, he asked if you would please send a copy of the permission letter to Commentary Press to clear the matter up for Badame.
(I did tell him you are no longer the host for the material.)

JanH: I just recently had need to correspond with Commentary Press for a refund, and still have the e-mail. The individual who corresponded with me signed his/her e-mails "C. M. Badame
for Commentary Press." I will e-mail to you privately if you want the info.

Thanks, Reagan. I think I have sufficient information. I will not go into any correspondence with CP about this. Why should I be bothered?

Ros: I was a bit naive at the time, assuming it was a group of friends not a business venture. AlanF asked Ray privately (he was visiting him at the time, I seem to remember) and he said it was fine with him. Didn't think more about it.

    Hi Jan and/or Kent,

Do copyright laws apply to pasting text from other sites/ pages on the net? How exactly, does that effect how I operate with cutting and pasting ACTUAL text from other sites/ pages? Example: I cut actual text out of many pages everyday and paste them directly to yahoo chatrooms along with the owner/writer of page/site. Tally's pages (among others) have been read literally by hundreds of people now, that would have never clicked on theURL (fear keeps their clicker still); it is then SEEN by the eye as it hits the screen and they can't use the excuse "we cant view apostate sites" because the text is staring at them. Am I doing ANYTHING illegal here? (be quite venice! )

    Thank you, sKally

    Jan,

As you know, copyright laws in the USA go beyond crazy. For example, several professors where I work use text books they've written for some of their classes. However, once a book is printed by a publishing firm, the publishing firm controls copying privileges, not the author. This point was made clear when a professor had to get written permission to make handouts from a book he wrote!

Given this arrangement, Ray Franz could give the okay to copy a chapter, but it's really not up to him to give permission, it's Commentary Press. To make matters more interesting, I've heard Ray owns Commentary Press, but don't know if this is true. If it's true, Ray could be doing a "good cop, bad cop" thing in order to protect his livelihood, which is not a bad thing--except it's a pain in the ass for people like you and others who promote C of C!

JAVA, Ray Franz is Commentary Press. He runs it out of his garage.

    Alan,

Well crap, that doesn't help in this matter of Jan's letter from CP. I have a lot of respect for Ray. CC has helped many exit, and confirmed what countless former Witnesses thought about the Tower. I believe Web sites using parts of his book only enhance future sales, instead of the opposite effect. I hope Ray is careful about this; I would hate to see him shoot the goose laying golden eggs.
