Okay, now check THIS out; from the 'rational lunacy' link above:

    Her email address is:

    From: "Gloria Schroeder" [email protected]
    Date: Sun, 9 May 2004 21:24:32 -0600
Subject: I wrote to you before

Now, type: ronan.net into google and you get this:

    http://www.accessmontana.com/scam.htm

    WARNING! E-Mail Scam Alert

If you get an email that appears to come from Access Montana,
claims that you are infected with a virus or asks you to open and read a billing notice,
and threatens to shut down or terminate your internet account then

    DO NOT BELIEVE IT!

This is a scam to get you to click on a link that will download a Trojan into your system.
Below are two examples of variations on the theme.
The messages have been sanitized for your protection.

    Example #1 --
    From: Sybil [mailto:[email protected]]
    Sent: Sunday, January 25, 2004 1:41 PM
    To: [email protected]
Subject: Virus Alert From ronan.net's Virus Report Center

If nothing apears on your virus report please dis-regard this message Click Here Now

    Example #2 --
    From: Crystal [[email protected]]
    Sent: Wednesday, January 21, 2004 8:48 PM
    To: [email protected]
Subject: Billing Notice From polson.net 's Accounting Dpt

    *** polson.net 's accounting dpt notice ***

Internet Billing Notice Please press "open" and read the attached Billing Notice. Note if you do not read this withing 24 hours
we at polson.net regret we will have to terminate internet service. (Link removed)

When you click on the the link, you are directed through a couple of essentially blank web pages which eventually download a file named page.hta which carries the trojan. The file, identified by Norton Antivirus as carrying the Trojan dropper virus, is not repairable, cannot be quarantined and Norton Antivirus, in my case, denied access to the file. Those of you without up-to-date antivirus protection may be vulnerable to this kind of attack. The nature of the trojan is unknown, but it could send personal information from your computer to unknown recipients.

Always seek independent verification of any claim made on the internet. Never take action or follow any directions sent to you unsolicited without verifying the source. Do not be fooled by the false authority gambit played by many online criminals. The message may appear to have been sent by a trusted friend or respected colleague when the actual sender may have spoofed their addresses to fool you.
