Today my mother got results from a biopsy she had on Tuesday. She was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer and has to have surgery to remove the thyroid. The doctor said this type of cancer is almost always curable which is good news. He also said she may have to have Radioactive Iodine treatment(s). Anyone here have any experience with this type of cancer?

My uncle Spero had that years ago and had radiation treatments, which completely removed the cancer. I THINK they removed his thyroid also, but I'm not sure. He was in the VA Hospital in San Antonio and received excellent care. Of course, he attributed his recovery to the fact that he swallowed a tablespoon of Vaseline EVERY MORNING, and believed that would cure everything that ailed you. I kid you not. That's why I laughed so hard at "My Big Fat Greek Wedding." Greek men really ARE like that!!!

Anyway, he had the cancer in the 1970's and didn't die until 2000, when he was 85. He had Alzheimer's, which runs in my mother's side of the family. He never had a recurrence of the cancer, though.

Keep us posted on your mom, okay?

    Love,

    Nina

Sorry to hear the bad news, but it does sound like it is cureable.

My thoughts to you and your mom.

Thanks for the replies so far. Even though the prognosis sounds good, the word "cancer" sends chills down our spine.

Sorry to hear about your Mom....

A few years ago, my boss's wife came down with thyroid cancer....I was really concerned...she was cured!!!

I believe it is one of those cancers that has a high-cure rate.

anyways....sure hope everything goes well for your Mom.

Devon, I'm sorry to hear about your mom. I believe it's a pretty curable cancer though. All the best to your mom.

I knew someone years ago who had thyroid cancer and was cured. The treatment isn't great but the end result is a total cure and taking thyroid pills for the rest of her life. Not bad considering the alternative

This is one of those cancers that has an excellent cure rate and has had for many years

My best friend, Mattie, just had surgery two weeks ago to remove her Thyroid due to cancer. They left a piece of it because they said that part was fine. She said she has to have the Iodine treatment too. Not sure if it is a precautionary measure or what. She will have to take pills for the rest of her life but at least she's going to live. As I've been told by one of the members on this forum.(He had this type of cancer years ago and is doing fine) If you are going to get cancer, that's the one to get. It's almost always curable. I hope all goes well for your mother.
