He also said she may have to have Radioactive Iodine treatment(s). Anyone here have any experience with this type of cancer?

Well it wasn't thyroid cancer, but I had a benign nodule on my thyroid that I had to have fixed with the radioactive iodine. I went to the hospital, they took me in a room and I had to sip a bit of the radioactive iodine through a straw. It took a few months for the nodule to go away and now I'm fine, so don't worry. This should do the trick, but even if she has to have an operation, this cancer is almost always curable. I did have uterine cancer a few years ago.........that wasn't fun but I've been cancer free now for two years.

Whenever you hear the word "cancer", you immediately think "I'm going to die"..........don't worry, I'm sure she'll be fine.

    God Bless.

Sorry to hear about your mom!

I was having a problem with one of my kidneys, they thought it might either be a bad kidney or cancer, they shot me with the iodine. Unfortunately, I was allergic to it and they had to medicate me right away!!!!

I did not have cancer, but I did take the radioactive iodine which destroyed my thyroid. It is a one time deal for me (but they could do multiple treatments to get it all). You emit a little bit of radiation, but it quickly passes. It was painless too.

I hope your mother pulls through and they get it all. Best to you.

    Devon,

I just went through a cancer scare with my mom. So I know how you feel. It makes you feel so helpless. In the end, everything worked out for the best for her and i'm sure it will for your mom, too.

    All my best,

    Devon,

I have a friend who had surgery for this type of cancer about 4 years ago. She is doing fine, taking thyroid pills to keep her metabolism regulated.

My nephew, too, had to have the iodine treatment as his thyroid was hyperactive. So they killed it and he, too, will be taking pills the rest of his life.

Your mother should be OK. Best wishes for a speedy recovery and hugs to the two of you.

I have/had thyroid cancer.... softball size tumor on the back of the thyroid. It is the "cancer of choice", grows slow and is curable. Mine was removed in 1989 and as far as I know, the cancer is still gone.

The iodine treatment is used to fine tune the actual removal. Iodine only attaches to thyroid cells, so by being radioactive it burns any left over and possibly cancerous cells. I went thru 3 treatments, 4 days of isolation each time.

What is worse than the removal is getting the Synthroid (pills for replacement hormones) to the correct level. It is a bitch, and the patient can be a bitch while testing levels. It took me years to get it right, and they just changed it again which may have caused my diabetes (we are looking into that currently).

Tell your mom to not worry much (easy to say), that she will be fine. And when she goes for the iodine treatment, get her some books to read... its damned boring and no one will come near her.

She can email me if she likes. [email protected]

My daughter had her thyroid removed last year. She too was put on synthroid. And it does take a while to get it adjusted.

She had a suspicious lump and it was large, so they took the whole thing out. Turned out not to be cancer..

She skips her pills sometimes and when she does she feels like she has a lump in her throat..when she starts taking the pills again..it goes away. She also has hot flashes if she skips them. Yep!

And they go away when she starts taking them again.

One of hubby's co-workers wives had throid cancer and she said the hardest part is regulating the medicine..so tell your mom to be patient. If she gets tired easy..have her tell the Dr so he can adjust the dosage.

Usually they can tell by blood tests if the dosage is correct..but not always.

And I too heard it is very easy to cure..Just be patient with her..she may have mood swings until her meds are right..

And the Iodine treatment has been around since I was a little kid!..(That was ages ago) I believe it was used for an overactive thyroid. They used it to destroy some of the throid..they didn't have other medication yet..

They iodized salt to cure goiters for the masses....

And blood tests are about the only way to test for thyroid levels (TSH).
